Description
In his latest collection, “Other Poems of Longing”, poet Juan-Paolo Perre explores the many shades of longing. Whether tinged with despair, hope, exaltation or great introspection it is one of the primordial of emotions that we sentient and self aware beings possess. In these exquisite lyric poems, Perre explores with his transcendent and deft touch longing in all of its universality.
Since his acclaimed debut collection, “A Confederacy of Joy” and the recently released, “Carmina: The Nomad Odes”, Perre has consistently created poems of great power and beauty, noted for their arresting music and lyricism.

The first thing I have to say about this book is that its title fits perfectly: those are undoubtedly poems of longing. They taste like heartbreak, but in a calm, not 100% painful, only partly. There’s love and care, and even a little bit of hope, there. But it’s still sad. I guess the word I’m looking for is nostalgic.
Reading this book felt like the first few minutes after a crisis, after crying your heart out: you’re still desperate, but it’s no longer intense. The only thing that’s left is the sudden realisation that there’s nothing else you can do except to wait, and that’s how reading this book felt like.
It’s personal, but not specific enough for one to be unable to relate to it; Juan-Paolo managed to get to the roots of those emotions and to portray them as if a specific point of heartbreak had been pinpointed. It’s often hard to review poetry with much criticism, so I’ll just say that I’d recommend most of the poems in this collection.
