Description

When my son Sean was born with special needs, his mother and I were told he would never be “normal” and we mourned for the life we had imagined for him. We thought we would have to be his teacher and protector, more so than the typical child. However, we quickly learned that lessons can come from the most unlikely places and that our world would be changed for the better in ways we could have never envisioned. . . all because of Sean.

Before he died on Father’s Day 2019, Sean taught me valuable life lessons that only became more pronounced upon his passing. He taught me how to build strong, authentic relationships. He taught me how to live in the moment. He taught me how to feel gratitude. Mostly, he taught me how to live like Sean, and these lessons are his legacy.

Live Like Sean is a wonderful book that, like Sean himself, will stay in your heart long after you turn the final page.”

“A book for anyone who has ever been fiercely inspired by a child—which should be everyone."

—Mitch Albom, New York Times best-selling author of Finding Chika

"Through the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, I had the great fortune to get to know Sean and his amazing family. With both a Montville and Hoboken connection, we immediately forged a friendship. Sean taught me about strength, resiliency, and mostly, patience. Live Like Sean provides a brief look into a life that touched so many and is a must-read about how life lessons can come from the most unexpected sources. Sean was a shining presence who impacted all who knew him, and he will be missed."

—Buddy “The Cake Boss” Valastro, New York Times best -selling author and CEO, Carlos’ Bakery

Live Like Sean is truly an inspiring read. As a father and as a corporate leader in his industry, TJ stopped time throughout Sean’s life to respect and admire his person. Yet it was only after Sean’s passing that TJ realized the extraordinary reach of Sean’s understanding of life and the lessons he taught so many friends and family members. This book is more than a “feel good’” book. In this book, TJ Nelligan captured a purpose behind Sean’s life that will impact your day and no doubt change your perspective on life.  We all should learn to live like Sean." —Marc Edenzon, former Regional President and Managing Director, Special Olympics North America

This book was so touching and such a wonderful way to view life. It serves as a friendly reminder that all life is precious, has value, and serves a wonderful purpose. I think Sean's legacy is bigger than he could've imagined it.

This book made me cry - but in a good way. I found myself tearing up at the various descriptions of Sean with family members and friends. I wish I had known him. And yet - as the author makes clear - many people would never have interacted with Sean, never made the effort. Would I have been one of those? I don't know - I hope not. I have never known a mentally-challenged person or the family of one though of course I've seen them from time to time. I've always felt sorry for parents when I see them with a child like that - but maybe I shouldn't. Maybe I should be envying them if they have a relationship with that child like T.J. did with Sean.

Not only was Sean a special person, but so were his parents.

I hope this book is a best seller and that the message of Sean's life will resonate with people. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is a terrific inspirational read.

This poignant account of a parent's journey with a child is tender, humble, and deeply moving. Have a tissue on hand as your heart resonates with compassionate for this difficult life experience. The family's determination and courage to meet the challenges is enhanced by their love and honor for the incredible gifts that Sean brought to everyone he encountered.

The writing is plain spoken and genuine, connecting the reader with their journey. The overall life lessons are nicely personalized with family stories and tributes by relatives and friends. I did skim some of the many sports stories, although I can appreciate the appeal to those who favor team sports and mostly male exchanges. The father's vulnerability and willingness to see and expand his limitations, his growth in self-awareness, and the beauty and reach of Sean's character are the capitals on my take-away: A GIFT.

The family also took their challenge and transformed it into benefits that will continue growing through community and organizational efforts.

The author's growth, humility, sincerity, compassion and useful insights make this an inspiring and instructive read. May we all live a little more Sean.
