Description

If you ask legendary football coach Lou Holtz about his greatest accomplishment, he doesn’t talk about winning a national championship at the University of Notre Dame. Instead, he’s most proud of his fifty-nine-year marriage to Beth and raising their four successful children together.

In A Lifetime of Love, Holtz offers couples young and old practical advice on marriage and parenting gleaned from his fifty-nine year marriage. He shares stories from he and Beth’s life away from the football field that reveal the couple’s deep faith in God and commitment to each other and their children.

The Holtzes faced many challenges throughout their marriage: Lou’s coaching jobs meant he was often away from home and caused their family to move multiple times. Beth suffered a long battle with illness. Through it all their marriage—and family—remained strong because of the practical lessons they learned as they rode the ups and downs of life.

In this inspiring story, you’ll find Lou and Beth’s powerful examples of a successful marriage and parenting, including:

· Find ways to connect daily.

· Make sure your children feel loved and appreciated.

· Be intentional about time together.

· Learn from each other and accommodate one another’s needs.

· Prioritize faith and prayer.

The Holtzes intended to write this book together, but after Beth’s death Lou decided to celebrate his wife’s memory by completing the story of their life together. Their children—Luanne, Skip, Kevin, Elizabeth, and their spouses—also share memories of growing up in the Holtz family, adding their voices to the story of their parents’ love.

“After twenty-five years of marriage and six kids, you start to think you know it all when it comes to life and kids, and then we read Lou Holtz's book! That kind of wisdom comes from a life well lived and lessons hard won. Readers will love his parenting honesty, be touched by his love for his late wife, Beth, and be inspired to ‘recruit’ (non-football types may call it ‘court’) their own spouses. A Lifetime of Love is one heck of a playbook for marriage and family life!”

“Having worked for Coach Holtz in my college days I knew him to be an inspiring and amazing leader and teacher. I witnessed firsthand his love for his wife and family. Reading A Lifetime of Love, however, introduced me to a new side of Holtz. This book offers a deeper, softer, and more-transparent look into the sacrament behind the man. Filled with sincere and honest insight and timeless wisdom, Holtz draws on a life well-lived and properly focused, giving all married couples (and couples-to-be) an invaluable guide to marital success. With his trademark wit and soul-rattling counsel, Coach Holtz has once again reveals what made him so successful on the field . . . namely, his faith, focus, and family. This book is a winner and the couples who take it to heart will assuredly be victorious too!”

“Inspiring! It is obvious that Coach Holtz and his lovely wife, Beth, approached their marriage and raising their children with the same devotion, passion, and preparation that Coach utilized to lead us as head coach for the Notre Dame football team. This book is a testament to the Holtz’s gift to rally and motivate people to approach marriage with trust, love, and commitment.”

A Lifetime of Love: A Game Plan for Marriage and Family Life is a true gem. Written by legendary football coach Lou Holtz, the book is an incredible guide for living out the vocation of marriage in a life-affirming way.

Holtz draws on his many decades of marriage to create a work that is inspiring, yet down-to-earth. It's the type of book you would want to give to a couple on their wedding day.

Holtz has written a book that is a treasure trove of wisdom about sacrificial love, parenting with purpose, and living a good life. It's an absolute pleasure to read and to ponder.

I cannot help but believe that Holtz's late wife Beth would be so proud of this book. As Holtz writes, "I think Beth liked the fact that I continued to recruit her for fifty-nine years. (Maybe another husband would say 'woo' or 'court', but a football coach uses the term 'recruit'!)

Trust, Commitment, and Love are core values. Lou Holtz provides great advice as to how one can lead a good life. Do right, Do everything to the best of your ability with the time allotted, and Show people you care.

Lou Holtz provides us with the following lessons throughout his work:

"Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it."

"One can't talk about rights and privileges, without mentioning obligations and responsibilities."
