Short attention spans — Chapter Book — Ages 8-12 — B&W Illustrations

15-year-old Sam is thrilled to be riding a rickety train with his parents in Egypt. It sure is different from America! Sam sets off alone, searching for snacks, as the train screeches through the night. Suddenly, a fire erupts and a wall of flames split the train in half, trapping Sam in the rear cars. Unable to return to his mom and dad, Sam is shoved to and fro by the panicked crowd. The train picks up speed, racing through the dark night. Should Sam jump to save himself? He's no stuntman. He's just a kid, a rower from Washington, DC. He's way out of his element. Soon, sparks swirl and smoke fills his nostrils. As the flames push him back into the final car, Sam is determined to escape. Because if he gives up, he'll never see his parents again. Can Sam survive the worst train disaster in Egypt's history?

I very much enjoyed this adventure. The compounding obstacles that Sam faces engages the reader. This is the first of the I Survived series that I’ve read and I can see many of my students connecting with the action in this book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an advanced copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.

This book was super fabulous. I would highly recommend it to any 8-14 year old kid who is into adventure books. This is a great addition to the "I escaped" series.

I escaped Egypt's deadliest train disaster follows Sam and his new friend Zahara who find themselves on a train from Cario to Luxor when one of the train cars catches on fire. They scramble to try to alert the engineer that there's a problem while also trying to get passengers to be aware of the dangers on board.

I enjoyed this so much-- from the spunky characters to the setting, it was all so great. There were photos throughout of some of the things our characters were facing. The art was a great additional touch and really added some color to the story. It was suspenseful without being too scary, which I think is a great balance for a middle grade novel.

The end of the book also included quotes from actual survivors of the accident and some historical information about Egypt as well. I think it's really cool that this book was a fun adventure story for kids while also being informational and educational. Well done to the authors!

This was a well-written account of the train disaster from the point of view of Sam, a young boy who was on the train. It was fast paced and gave a good overview of Egyptian life from his perspective as well as an entertaining story of his harrowing adventure on the train with his new friend, Zahara, an Egyptian traveling alone for the holidays. I had not heard of this disaster (or I had forgotten about it) so this was truly eye opening for me. It's written for children but all audiences can learn from this book and the others in the series. There's a section in the back explaining Egyptian culture pertaining to mummies and the discovery of the pharaohs' tombs.
