A Note From the Publisher

About the author
Caryn Jeanne Carruthers was born and raised in Colorado and currently lives with her family in Austin, Texas. She’s a self-confessed food lover and artist of many mediums. Her passion for healthy eating and her love of cooking started young and flourished when faced with food allergies and sensitivities. She believes food is love and shares her recipes and creations in that spirit. Caryn authors the blog tastynfree.com where she shares her photography, recipes and thoughts on gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free food.

Smorgasbowl is Caryn’s first book where she has enjoyed the challenge of creating the book in its entirety, including the photography, cooking, styling, recipe creation, book design and writing. Smorgasbowls are, unsurprisingly, Carryn’s primary way of eating. A few years ago, she cut grains from her diet and started eating mostly vegetables and meat. She had to rethink elements of her meals without too many carbs. Her new diet included familiar foods that had new preparations, textures and sauces. Nothing was quite melding the way she wanted on a flat plate so she dug out for beautifully crafted bowls from her cupboards. At first it wasn’t a conscious change, but she soon realised she was using a bowl for every meal and tailoring each to each member of her family (husband and two children) depending on their preferences, food allergies etc.

Fantastic cookbook! Without presenting it as such, Carruthers has created a cookbook that addresses two important needs: (1) creating healthy, delicious, and beautiful work lunches and (2) building an outstanding pantry. I was intimidated at times by some unfamiliar ingredients, but other readers, especially grain connoisseurs, would probably not be. This cookbook made me dream of a day -- probably not far off in our consumerist future -- when curated grocery bundles get marketed alongside new publications. Specialty grains and exotic spices, boxed with your book, ready to cook.

This was a fun and inventive cookbook with beautiful pictures. Made with mostly easy to find ingredients, it still managed to create new ideas for recipes that I wanted to try making. I will probably end up buying this book because it was just so fun and unique.
