Description

Derek and Sandra Tile believe karma requires a little help on occasion; that sometimes comeuppances need expediting for the greater good.

Opening in their hometown of Reading, where Derek and Sandra issue notices to poorly parked motorists, before moving to a holiday complex in Wales, where they take an unconventional approach to dealing with their neighbour’s noisy dog, Just Deserts follows the Tiles over the course of seven days as their actions in the name of order and balance become more and more extreme.

Jerry Crowther’s debut novel is an original dark comedy full of colourful characters whose actions will cause the reader to laugh, rage and cringe in equal measure.

Just Deserts by Jerry Crowther
Derek and Sandra Tile are the extreme us.. you notice a car parked in two spaces but don’t say anything well Derek and Sandra have an issue notice for that.. they do what we wish we could.
The book follows Derek and Sandra over a week where the behaviour becomes more and more extreme…
This book was funny and my favourite parts of it were where you were told the consequences of the couples actions on the perpetrators.. there were always positive.. it was so funny!

This was an interesting one to review, I had mixed feelings about this books. There was some dark humour and clever bits of revenge by Mr & Mrs Tile but at the same time some bits that seemed completely unnecessary to the story and slightly confusing.
Mr Tile seemed to have some sort of ASD which meant he obsessed about certain things and was unable to pick up on social cue, leading to some funny discussions with his wife. Mrs Tile was obviously the boss in the relationship and the driving force behind everything.
Overall I enjoyed this book, but it didn’t quite live up the my expectations based on the blurb.

Thanks to The Book Guild and NetGalley for providing me with a free ARC in return for my honest review.
I really enjoy British humor, subtle and dark comedy and this book was a joy for me to read. We follow the exploits of Derek and Sandra Tile as they go about their lives, and impose their own brand of "justice" on people. From private ticketing of improperly parked cars, to barking dogs at their summer vacation rental, to setting up rude people for a comeuppance at a grocery store, and their final dastardly plot to bid good riddance to a mn who many consider rude. The stories are a hoot to me, and these two are perfectly matched as their appreviate and initialize everything they do. What makes this different from other books is that after most all of these escapades the author gives us a look at some of the peoples lives a few years in the future, and while we may cringe at first, for the most part people are better off after the Tile's intervention. A very quick read, but for me a highly enjoyable read and which leaves me hoping that the author revisits the Tiles in future books. Top Notch effort by author Jerry Crowther!

3.5 upped to 4
There's a lot of potential and some very interesting parts full of black humour. It'a mixed bag as I loved some parts and was bored by other.
I think that the author will surely write interesting books.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine

I always admire a writer bold enough to ignore the usual tropes of their chosen genre and thus creating something innovative and vital. That's one of the many reasons why this novel is so outrageously funny.
Derek and Sandra Tile, or perhaps more correctly, Sandra and Derek Tile (they would appreciate the distinction) are just about the most un-PC characters I've come across ever. I absolutely adore them!
This is situation comedy at its best. Perfect material for the BBC before they were forced to go all PC. Or perhaps a dark remake of 'Carry On Camping'?
I do hope Jerry Crowther intends to do more with these characters. They really are fabulous.

This was such a great book! Satirical and witty, it kept my attention the whole way through. This is my first book by Crowther and I’m excited to see what’s next for him.
