Description

It's 1895 and fourteen year old Hannah Brandt is struggling as a pioneer on a Nebraska homestead. When her imagination is captured by a wild filly, she becomes obsessed with horses, opening the door to her destiny. Just three years later she enters a relay race at the first Cheyenne Frontier Days and her fate is sealed. She takes on a new name, Sunny Gale, and pursues her career in rodeo much to the disgust of her young husband. Sunny defies convention with every move as the drive to compete takes over her life, leaving everything else behind, including husbands and children.

Award-winning author Jamie Lisa Forbes has once again brought us complex characters in a saga based on real women when rodeo was wide open for them to become stars. It is a story of a woman determined to find glory no matter how high the personal cost or where the trail might lead.

It's the late 1800's and we come upon a family living in Nebraska...an unforgiving land, hard on beast and human. Hannah is 14 years old, living with her step-father and mother. The winters are filled with cold that make it hard to breathe, blizzards that could leave snow up to the cabin's roof. There is no room in a young girl's life for dreams, only hard work that fills her days. Yet her imagination is captured when she comes upon a wild filly leading her to an obsession with horses. Three years later we find Hannah with a new name "Sunny Gale" and a destiny fulfilled with a rodeo career. This book was amazing, written in such a way that reading it was like looking at a painting, it's descriptions were vivid with a story that captured you from the first page to the last. My thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
