Description

A Southern novel full of friendships and finding love.

“There’s no time,” Colin said. “You have to go. Find me, call me . . .”

Jacey and Colin shared the three most intense days of their lives together, waiting for help as Mississippi floodwaters surrounded them. Jacey knew Colin was the love of her life—until her rescue boat went under water, along with Colin’s last name and pieces of Jacey’s memory.

The last thing she remembered was being submerged in water. Again.

As Jacey walks down the aisle as the maid of honor in her friend’s wedding a year later, the last person she expects to see is Colin. The biggest surprise, though, is that the man of her dreams is not wearing jeans and flip-flops as he did when he held her through those long nights of the flood. He’s the preacher.

As Jacey’s memories come flooding back, it’s almost more than she can take. The fate of the young family trapped with them haunts her. The unwavering honesty—and support—of her best friend Georgia forces her to take a fresh look at herself.

She’s spent her life afraid of love. But a flood is opening Jacey’s heart in the most unexpected ways.

A Southern novel full of friendships and finding love.

Celeste Fletcher McHale’s The Sweet Smell of Magnolias and Memories is a deeply emotional Southern novel about love, friendship, and second chances, made all the more powerful in audiobook form.

Jacey and Colin meet under harrowing circumstances—trapped together during a devastating Mississippi flood. In those three unforgettable days, Jacey is certain she’s found the love of her life. But when disaster strikes during her rescue, she not only loses Colin’s last name but also fragments of her memory. A year later, while serving as maid of honor at her friend’s wedding, Jacey is stunned to come face-to-face with Colin again—only this time he’s standing at the altar, not as a groom, but as the preacher.

As Jacey’s memories return in painful, vivid flashes, she must reckon with her fears, her past, and the truths she’s long avoided. Alongside her fiercely loyal best friend Georgia, Jacey begins to confront what it truly means to open herself to love—and to heal.

The audiobook narration beautifully captures the Southern setting and the raw, heartfelt emotions at the center of the story. McHale’s signature blend of humor, honesty, and poignancy shines, and hearing it performed adds an intimate, layered dimension that draws listeners even deeper into Jacey’s journey.

Bittersweet, tender, and ultimately hopeful, The Sweet Smell of Magnolias and Memories is more than just a romance—it’s a story of resilience, faith, and the courage it takes to embrace love after loss. Perfect for fans of Southern women’s fiction and heartfelt love stories, this audiobook will stay with you long after the final chapter.

This is not the type of book I normally read since I am not even remotely religious. That being said , I absolutely loved this book. The friendship between Jacey and Georgia is what every woman wants and needs. The traumatic situations are described is such a manner that you feel as though you are there. I found myself laughing and rooting for Jacey. She is a whirlwind of love and confusion and knee jerk decisions. Read this book so you can see what happens!
Thank you so much NetGalley for this audiobook.

The author is slowing becoming one of my favorites. The characters in this book brought me so much joy and felt like old friends. The audio is just spot on. A narrator or narrators can make or break a book and the narration in this one was money!! Friendship, love and trauma are all you need to make a great book and this one was woven together perfectly.

Thank you so much for to e ARC. I enjoyed listening to every second!

This book had me going through all my emotions in the best possible way. I think fiction is a great way to grow empathy in our lives and this was a fantastic book for it. No life is without tragedy and this book certainly shows that. It also shows that there is hope out of tragedy in the symbol of a Magnolia branch.

One thing the author does well is write about friendships and how they are in real life. Family is one thing, but there are things that only a best friend says and does for you and with you. And the friendship between Jacey and Georgia is a friendship goal to have in life.

And it was interesting to see that the loving connection that arose between Colin and Jacey during such a traumatic time was also deep enough to last.

The story of her connection with the children is also beautiful, and I would love it if it were like that in real life. Spoiler alert: I love adoption stories, especially when it involves children older than babies.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Nan Kelley, who does a great job!
