Description

A traumance. A tragedy. A love story.

Fairy tales weren't always about finding true love with Prince Charming. Once upon a time, they were dark stories about innocence lost, seeking through veiled attempts to make sense of life's unfathomable hardships. Unfit parents turned to evil stepmothers, kindly neighbors became fairy godmothers, while alluring but dangerous men were presented under the guise of the Big Bad Wolf. Through their trials, the heroes were forever changed. For better or worse.

It is a tale as old as time. Good girl meets bad boy; the pure faces the corrupt. Loosely inspired by classic tropes, Fairy Tales From the Underworld breathes new life into age-old motifs, casting them against the backdrop of modern times. Beasts and monsters no longer lurk in shadows but now inhabit our protagonists, who are plagued by the ceaseless whispers of their inner demons.

A Bedtime Story is not a romance, but a raw erotic tale chronicling the twisted love affair between two profoundly broken souls: the child of the moon and the child of the underworld. Their paths were never meant to cross… And yet, by a twist of fate, Beauty meets the Beast, plunging into a world of lies, deceit and debauchery, where her only salvation lies in the hands of her captor.

As Part I of the Fairy Tales From the Underworld saga, this first installment delves deeply into the psyche of its characters, offering a poignant exploration of the relentless pull between torment and passion in the aftermath of trauma.

Author's note:
Trigger-sensitive readers, please beware. A Bedtime Story is not meant to be read as a romance, even a dark one. It is a psychologically driven exploration of an unhealthy power dynamic and twisted bond born of trauma. This book contains graphic sexual content, emotionally triggering content, and deals with heavy subject matter. Suitable for readers 18+

Original instrumental soundtrack by Lana Chacra.

This book leans hard into what fairy tales used to be before they were softened: ugly, haunting, morally uncomfortable, and emotionally charged. The modern retelling framework works extremely well here. Beauty and Beast aren’t symbolic figures, they are walking wounds, each shaped by neglect, abuse, and self-destruction. Their connection is not aspirational, but it is compelling.

What stood out most to me was the psychological realism. The power dynamic is unhealthy, yes, intentionally so, but it is written with a level of emotional awareness that keeps it from feeling shallow or exploitative. You can feel the characters’ internal conflicts, their self-loathing, their longing, and their desperation for something that resembles safety, even when they know the situation is wrong. The narrative constantly walks the line between attraction and revulsion, and that tension is where the book is strongest.

The prose itself is atmospheric and immersive. The writing style suits the subject matter: heavy, poetic, and often unsettling. It asks the reader to sit with discomfort instead of smoothing it over, which I appreciated. This is not a story you skim, it demands attention and emotional investment. The only reason this is not a full five-star read for me is pacing. Some sections linger a little too long in the characters’ internal states without advancing the plot as much as they could. That said, the emotional groundwork it lays becomes increasingly important as the story unfolds, especially with the cliffhanger ending setting up Part II.

Readers should absolutely take the trigger warnings seriously. This book is intense, emotionally heavy, and deliberately confrontational. But for readers who seek dark, psychological, trauma-focused erotic fiction with substance and emotional depth, this will hit hard, in the best and worst ways. I am very interested in continuing the series and seeing where the characters’ descent, healing, or destruction ultimately leads.

A Bedtime Story feels destined to be incredibly divisive. It’s a twisted, erotic, and gritty retelling of a classic: Beauty and the Beast. Laura, a functional but damaged young woman, becomes the reluctant captive of Kayne, a man who is equal parts dark prince and nightmare fuel. The love is not sweet, comfortable, or poetic, but I was invested. It nails the old-school fairy tale vibe, where nobody's getting rescued by a sparkly godmother, or any other bubbly deus ex machina, and happy endings are often horrifying when you take a step back (I'm looking at you, Cinderella).

Knowing that, I think the story actually does exactly what it's meant to do: tell the story of messy people as they navigate an intense, uncomfortable situation with a large degree of intrusive horniness. It deals in a metric ton of heavy topics, and I think it works (for the most part), but if abuse and suicide are triggers for you, it is important to know that one "plus" I felt while reading was the fact that it upset me a little bit, specifically because it felt well-managed rather than used as drama or spectacle. The abuse, especially, is worth talking about because this story gets pitch-black, and I know some readers will side-eye Laura for her actions in Kayne’s worst moments. But this is exactly the sort of thing that made me feel uncomfortable in the right way. Love, unfortunately, is not always reasonable or healthy. Which, again, I think is kinda the point.

I wasn’t fully sold on the use of BDSM, or its portrayal at times, especially as such a focus in Kayne’s life. I liked how he shifted as he handled his own conflicts, but the line between compelling character work, dark worldbuilding, and kinky spice felt too blurred. The BDSM that drew me in was too tied to questionable consent and abuse. This made it hard to engage with Kayne. I usually suspend judgment for a story, but it wasn’t easy here.

Laura, on the other hand, totally won me over. Watching her fight her way through all the darkness and her own messy feelings was honestly awesome. I do understand why her story can drag. But, without giving anything away, the ending had me so wound up in, "Yes, girl. Get it!" that I went to tell my poor husband, forgetting about my pinched nerve, and hurt myself while excitedly waving my arms about.

The writing itself is not a style I typically like. It is quite atmospheric and has an omnipresent POV, which felt a bit unclear at times, but I haven't been reading many books with that POV, so it may be me. However, based on the writing style overall, I would give this book top ratings in that category. L.C. Moon blew me away with some hauntingly beautiful lines, and I was fully immersed from start to finish.

Bottom line: I can’t give you a neat “if you like X, you’ll love this” rec. It’s too weird and too dark for that. But I gave it four stars because it’s a wild, exciting ride, and I’m already eyeing the rest of the series. Seriously, check the trigger warnings and maybe a few reviews before you dive in. This is an egregiously compelling premise if you're into morally questionable stories, though, so I highly suggest giving it a chance.
