Description

How to Be Kind follows Buttercup the Bee through activities and strategies to help children learn to be kind to themselves and others. Each section of the book focuses on completing concrete activities and learning specific skills to achieve the goal of improving empathy, social skills, and understanding. Children are encouraged to complete these workbook activities with a parent, caregiver, therapist, or teacher.

In a world full of different paths, leading with kindness will guide children to choose empathy over apathy, compassion over callousness, and love over hate. How to be Kind: Making the World a Better Place through Empathy and Compassion is a workbook that walks children through a series of activities and strategies to develop the tools needed to improve social skills, resolve conflicts, make good decisions, and boost their emotional intelligence. Our children rely on us as a resource and a guide to become mindful, caring, and kind, and this workbook will help you navigate your way through heart-warming lessons and tough conversations, creating a safe space for you and your child to grow.

Looking to help a child blossom into a kind and caring individual? Research shows that kindness can boost a child's well-being, emotional intelligence, and social competence, leading to a fulfilling life.

As mental health challenges continue to plague our young people, this book provides parents, teachers, therapists, and caregivers with activities and strategies to build social skills and emotional intelligence, giving children the tools needed to improve their self-worth and relationships with others. Follow Buttercup the Bee to skill-building lessons in self-care, manners, meditations, and listening to others.

While this workbook involves social skills training and provides concrete activities to improve kindness and empathy for children diagnosed with autism, it is designed to work for any child from  kindergarten through fifth grade.

This book filled me with warm, fuzzy feelings. I definitely feel inspired to be a little kinder to myself and others after reading it.

While I could see myself using this as a resource with the children in my care, there were a couple of things I felt could be improved.

I found the chapter on forgiveness to be slightly lacking, but I understand that it's a complicated and delicate topic to cover well in only a few paragraphs. We can encourage the kind of understanding that often leads to forgiveness, but it can't be forced, nor should it be. Feeling anger toward someone does not make us unkind. What matters is how we express our anger.

Also, the references to "good eye contact," while surely well-intentioned, were upsetting to read as an Autistic person. To say that, "a good listener should make eye contact," is not true for everyone. For Autistic people, eye contact can cause sensory overwhelm and take a lot of mental effort, which actually distracts from our ability to listen. If I'm looking away while someone is talking to me, this is usually a sign that I am listening closely to what they are saying. As an Autistic advocate, I am passionate about ensuring that Autistic children are free to be their most healthy and authentic selves. Empathy must go both ways.

How To Be Kind is a well-written book. The writing is bouncy yet clear. The illustrations are cute! I love bees and flowers!

Written in a way that children can learn from and appreciate, this book was well-researched and includes solid information on mindfulness, kindness, and acting intentionally with those around us. I appreciated the illustrations and word games to help readers express their understanding in addition to receptively understanding the new knowledge.

I recommend this book for schools and libraries, as well as therapy offices.

*How to Be Kind: Making the World a Better Place through Empathy and Compassion* is a warm and uplifting workbook that helps children learn to be kind, caring, and understanding. As I read through it, I was impressed by how it combines gentle lessons with fun, hands-on activities that teach important life skills like solving problems, making good choices, and practicing self-care. Buttercup the Bee is a cheerful guide who makes each activity enjoyable and easy to follow. I also appreciate how the book includes helpful strategies for children with autism while remaining meaningful and accessible for any child from kindergarten through fifth grade. In a world that often feels busy and disconnected, this workbook is a wonderful reminder that kindness and empathy can make life better for everyone. Too often, we forget how important it is to help young children understand and express their emotions—this book helps fill that gap beautifully.

I highly recommend it to parents, teachers, and caregivers who want to nurture emotional growth and kindness in children. A huge thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read this advanced copy.

How to Be Kind will be a great book for parent and child to read together to discuss self-reflection, empathy, and showing kindness to others. The interactive format of this book allows the potential for rich and vivid discussions about how we should treat ourselves and others with kindness. It is lovely that showing kindness while using social media is addressed as well. I highly recommend this book to families with elementary aged children.

This book is great for kids but also makes you think as an adult. I love that! all of the activities are great and interactive, I also love the reflective aspect of this. It would be a great part of a homeschool curriculum. The activities are great and encourage creative play and imaginative play. The chapter on forgiveness is a lesson that everyone needs a good brush up on. And I love the fact this is included. Teaching not only kindness but being humble and forgiving too. Great life lessons for a kids book!
