Description
GUIDED ONLY BY THE STARS AND THE MEMORY OF MARA’S EYES, Ankwar’s village pariah Gaspare forges paths over desolate mountains and raging rapids to find his way back to his village. If he loses his focus or abandons his nerve, he will never know the freedom and power of being Ankwar’s destined redeemer. Yet if he succeeds, Gaspare risks losing forever his chance at happiness with the one whose eyes haunt him and lead him home.
Gaspare’s greatest fear becomes his looming reality as he claims his calling and risks losing Mara once again. Based on the real life of Ötzi the Iceman, murdered over 5,000 years ago, Shroud of Ice searches for answers to the haunting echoes of will we ever be enough. Gaspare in the role of Ötzi is a call to stand one last time against the darkness because not all who are dead are silent.

Shroud of Ice* is a beautifully atmospheric story that blends mystery, emotion, and a touch of magic into a chilling, immersive read. From the very beginning, the icy setting pulls you in with vivid descriptions that make the cold feel almost tangible. The tone is haunting yet delicate, creating a world that’s both harsh and full of quiet beauty. The characters are layered and compelling, each carrying their own secrets and strengths. Their relationships and struggles feel authentic, and watching them unravel the story’s deeper truths kept me hooked. The emotional undercurrents are handled with care, giving the plot real weight.
There are a few moments where the pacing slows, but the overall journey is engaging and rewarding. The final chapters tie the themes together beautifully, leaving a lingering sense of wonder and reflection. Atmospheric, thoughtful, and quietly powerful.
I found this fascinating in how it brought Ötzi back to life after 5000 years. Krasny clearly did her homework—she hiked his actual mountain route and visited his remains in Italy—and that dedication shows in the attention to detail. What I appreciated most was how she used all the archaeological evidence (the copper tools, the medicinal knowledge, even the different blood types on his clothing) to construct a plausible human story rather than just recounting dry facts. The premise that "not all who are dead are silent" really resonated with me. She gave this ancient murder victim dignity and a name, transforming him from a specimen into a person with motivations, relationships, and a life worth understanding. It's the kind of historical fiction that makes you think differently about archaeology—these weren't just artifacts, they were people living full, complex lives millennia ago.
This is amazing historical fiction take based on the true mysterious story of Ouzi the Iceman! I've always been fascinated by his story and to read it in this story and format had me enticed before I even knew what was happening! It's filled with drama, mystery, adventure, and intrigue and I had a hard time putting it down once I got started. This is definitely be added to my "will read again" pile and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction, neolithic history, the story of man and mystery.
I would love to thank the author, publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and check out this ARC book in exchange for an honest review.

Time travel at its best! Though this saga happened thousands of years ago, the authors' meticulous research and hauntingly lyrical prose quickly enveloped me in their primitive world. The struggle of the miners, the treacherous mountain travel, the village council, the love and rivalry within Gasperes family, brilliantly brought his world alive. Age-old themes of power, betrayal and love bring the story of the Iceman to its conclusion. A must read.
