Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book. My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.

This is an amazing adaptation on the seventh book in the Oz series by L. Frank Baum. Since it has been probably fifteen years since I have read the series, I couldn't tell you at all how closely it follows the book, but having left on a cliffhanger (rude, but understandable if you want to show everything in the novel and not just a super condensed version), I think I may go back and read the original novel.

The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous.

Definitely would recommend!

The thing about the Oz books was that L. Frank Baum didn’t really want to keep writing them, sort of the way Sir Arthur Conan Doyle didn’t want to keep writing about Sherlock Holmes, but for both of them, the fans demanded it, and so did the money, so write they did.

This adoption of the Patchwork Girl of Oz, the seventh book in the Oz series, has only the first five comics together, so will end on a cliff hanger. But the artwork is very nice, and the story moves at a good pace. Ojo, the Unlucky, and his grandfather have run out of food, so they decide to find some, and come upon a magician, who is trying to give life to the Patchwork girl, so she can be their servant. But in doing so, he accidentally freezes Ojo’s grandfather, so now he has to go in search of a cure, with the Patchwork Girl, and the glass cat, which was brought to life earlier.

If you love the original stories of Oz, you will probably want to get this one. It is nicely done, though it has been a while since I read this one. Kids who know nothing about Oz, could probably get into this one easily, because there is a lot of back story, so no one is lost.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book has already been published, in August 2025.

As Wicked For Good Approaches i’m deeply in my Oz bag (have been for a year now). I was so excited when I got approved for this arc cause I just felt this was such a fun new media to enjoy a Oz tale and it didn’t disappoint. I cannot wait for volume two as this does end on quite a bit of a cliffhanger.

What a fun and exciting read from the Oz world. With the revival of the Oz craze this fits perfectly into bringing a new light to the novels and with that the spark of young readers being introduced in a beautifully illustrated graphic novel. The pacing was great and everything tied together so well. Can’t wait for vol 2!

I've never read any of the Oz books in any form. This was an interesting one to start with. Frampton does a good job of illustrating the story, and though I can't compare it to the original, I'd wager it's a pretty true retelling. I love seeing the classics turned to graphics!

I’m sorry Skottie Young but I might have a new favourite illustrator!

Pros:
Artwork is fantastic -I can’t imagine the amount of labour and love that must have gone into creating this.

Cons:
I will read every single one of these but splitting one book into 20 issues across 4 graphic novels is asking a bit much from a casual readership (Skottie Young adapted each book into 8 issues or less)
Wait, assuming one volume is published per year then I’m going to waiting for 3 years!

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

The Patchwork Girlof Oz is the first volume in a new graphic novel series for children featuring Ojo the Unlucky who's having to travel in search of food as they're down to the last loaf on their bread tree. On their travels, they come across a house when Ojos uncles old magician friend. The magician is just finishing off making his potion of life, which turns inanimate objects into live ones and hopes to turn the Patchwork girl his wife has made into a servant to help her with the housework she hates doing. But, things go wrong, and the magicians wife and Ojos uncle are turned into statues. But the magic worked on the Patchwork girl who sets out with Ojo to find the ingredients needed to reverse the magic and turn them back to life.
Having not read the full series of Oz original stories, I'm not very familiar with the main characters in this book, but it does mention Dorothy, Ozma, and the Tin Man. The illustrations are fun and eye-catching to look at. I'm hoping to continue this series as the book ends on a cliffhanger of sorts, and I'm curious to find out what happens next.

I requested this from Netgalley on a total whim, not expecting much, but it ended up being an absolute hit with me! I loved the artwork and colouring and thought the characters and the way Otis Frampton portrays Oz was really fun! I really hope there'll be a volume 2 because I will absolutely be continuing!! There are some characters you might not know if you've only seen the original movie, but there is a little guide at the back, which I found really helpful, since I've heard of most of the characters, but didn't really know who they were or much about them at all, really.

Really promising so far and accurate so far to the book with story telling style and pacing updated for modern tastes. the Patchwork girl is burst of energy like she is depicted in multiple adaptations and the glass cat is still very much vain like in the book.

This volume really did well on setting stuff up for the next volume (which all the actions and adventures will take place). Not that this book is no good but it's not a boring, slow burn thing. The dialogue and the characters are excellent. Love how they interact with each other. Each had their own shining moments. The art works hand in glove in bringing this graphic novel to life. It may not give you the jam pack actions but you'll enjoy this book nonetheless.

Follow the adventures of a glass cat, a boy and a patchwork girl as they travel through Oz, in search of ingredients to safe their loved ones.

The Patchwork Girl of Oz is definitely a comic book aimed at children, and thus I will be reviewing it as such. From the very start this is very obvious. It is based on the seventh book in the Oz series and is a bundle of the first five comics. Thus it will end on a cliffhanger, you are warned beforehand!

The art work is very cute, I like it and it fits the atmosphere of the story. It flows pretty well, though I have to admit I do not like most of the characters very much. They just felt a little off at some points. The story moves at a good pace and is very easy to read. The language used is perfect for children.

You don’t need to know any of the original stories of Oz to be able to follow this one. It could very well be a standalone. The story moves perfectly fine on its own, giving us just enough information about Oz and it’s culture to be able to understand the storyline.

Volume one did a great job in setting up for future volumes. I enjoyed myself enough to pick up Volume two!

The Patchwork Girl of Oz is a delightful and whimsical reimagining that captures the heart of Baum’s original tale while giving it a fresh, modern visual voice. The vivacious patchwork girl Scraps comes alive off the page with her earnest curiosity and unwavering energy, anchoring the story as she and Ojo navigate a quest full of oddball magic and new friends. The art is rich and playful, featuring bright colors, expressive characters, and detailed landscapes that make every panel feel alive and striking. This volume strikes a perfect balance between lighthearted adventure and genuine emotional stakes, making it a magical entry point into Oz for readers old and new.
