Description
Crime reporter Eleanor Wooley is reporting on the annual Mother’s Day Rodeo when wildfire breaks out in Gold Strike County high country and a dead woman is pulled from the nearby Little Bear River.
The community turns inward in fear. Wooley, following her own instincts and a series of deadend trails, worries that this year’s Rodeo Queen may be the next victim. During a high-country excursion to Me-Wuk sacred grounds to foil a scheme to dam the Little Bear River, wildfire breaks out again. Anishinaabe wilderness guide Leonard Parker appears again and continues to surprise.
In the aftermath of one crisis after another in this second book of the Wild Horses Mystery series, it’s a beautiful wild stallion who Eleanor and her lover, rancher Easton Jode, have rescued from slaughter that restores the light in a small rural town living under the shadow of death.

“People start out in one place, intending to go to a specific destination with a specific goal, and they wind up in an entirely different situation.” Ain't that the truth!!
I wanted to live in a certain place but wound up in another. Maybe someday.
I found this one an interesting story. I wanted to share this quote before I forgot it. I know it will resonate with some readers if not all. I know it did me.
I couldn't put this book down. Wow!! Its definitely a page turner. I didn't think I'd like it as well as I did but I did! Its definitely different than what I'm used to reading for sure!
Did I lose some sleep yes. I did but so very worth it. A very satisfying story.
I also wanted to share that I enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It was described so well that I thought I was there! Wow!!
5 stars for an awesome adventure!

A really enjoyable sequel to Eleven Stolen Horses taking place in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, an area not often visited by contemporary novelists. Newspaper reporter Eleanor Wooley is pursuing a story on a possible serial killer of young women while her boyfriend Easton is involved with confronting the horrors of the BLM’s roundups of wild horses on federal land. The characters continue to evolve and the subplot concerning the wild horse roundups and abuses is particularly strong and moving. I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed are my own.

In Eleanor Wooley, we find a protagonist as strong and resourceful as the wild horses she fights to protect. When a wildfire ravages the High Sierra, Eleanor discovers she must trust her instincts to catch a serial killer in a wilderness just as dangerous as the people in it. Set against a scorching Gold Country landscape that is burning and choked with smoke, Robin Somers masterfully weaves an atmospheric, high-stakes mystery that explores the rugged edges of Western culture and the resilience of the human spirit.
