Description

Kara Martinson and Harry Canton weren’t exactly high school sweethearts, but they did share one night neither will ever forget. Twenty-seven years later, Harry surprises Kara at an art gallery opening and discovers he left her with more than just memories when he went away to college. Desperate to connect with the family he never knew existed, Harry convinces his son to move to Stonehill—and pleads with Kara to come, too.

Kara hasn’t stepped foot in their hometown since the day she was sent away to a home for unwed mothers. Now Harry’s back in her life and as they put together the pieces of his parents’ betrayal, old heartaches start to feel anew. She wants to be near her family, but returning to Iowa means facing some things…and some people…she isn’t quite ready to.

Can Harry convince her to forgive those who betrayed her so they can embrace the future they were robbed of so long ago? Or will the pain of the past be too much for Kara to overcome?

The Road Leads Back is available in both print and ebook formats.

The road leads back

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

27 years ago Harry took Kara's virginity after their graduation party. Now she is an artist. At her exhibition Harry learns that the result of that night was a son and that he is the grandfather to a Downs Syndrome girl. Rejected by her family for being pregnant all those years ago Kara left town. With regular financial support from his mother who said she would tell him that she was pregnant she had been sent to a home for unmarried mothers. After meeting his adult son who is now out of work Harry asks them all to come back to their home town with him, offering Phil a job and all of them a home with him.
The strength of Harry's emotions when he realises all he has missed and the anger towards his own mother are powerful and quite moving. The evolvement of the relationships between the family moved me very much. In particular the developing rekindled relationship between Harry and Kara, where both need to accept their pasts and live in the present. The book is written with so much compassion and emotion that I smiled, laughed and even cried. The perfect combination of emotions a book should deliver. 4.5****
