Description

Hazelnut the squirrel’s nest was in a hole in a tree, and she had everything ready for Winter: a warm bed made of leaves, a pantry full of nuts, and hundreds of seeds hidden in secret places all over the forest …

Winter is just around the corner, and Hazelnut has worked hard to get ready. In her cozy nest high up in a tree, the little squirrel watches the last leaves of the fall flutter past, when suddenly the tree trunk crashes to the ground. Oh no! The beavers have chomped it down! Hazelnut is heartbroken. What will she do now? Luckily, the beavers realize their mistake and quickly offer her their home. The squirrel makes an effort, working hard to carry logs across the river, but soon abandons the idea of spending her days in the water. Later, while searching for a new place to shelter, she meets the bats, who kindly offer her their cave for the winter, but…

The first snowflakes are falling… Will Hazelnut find a comfy home in time?

An exciting adventure through the forest that will invite readers to discover the importance of tolerance and respect for living together, and how generosity and solidarity flourish in the face of adversity.

This one is a heartwarming tale of found friendship and being a good neighbour and friend to others -being kind, welcoming, accepting of differences and generous! We loved this sweet tale (my 5 year old and I) and would highly recommend it to others!

Welcome, Little Squirrel is about a squirrel named Hazelnut whose plans for the winter are abruptly changed and she must figure out and adapt to her next steps. The story shows how different families, in this case groups of animals, have different traditions and lifestyles. Eventually, Hazelnut figures out where she fits.

The page length lends itself to a read aloud or bedtime story and the illustrations are cute, yet not super realistic. I am still left feeling some sort of way about the group of beavers, though.

Thanks to Cuento de Luz and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.

This was such a sweet read. I read it with my 4 and 8 year old granddaughters, and my 4 year old especially loved this one.

The story follows Hazelnut, a squirrel who has everything perfectly ready for winter—until her whole world literally comes crashing down. From there, she’s trying to figure out where she belongs, and meets different animals along the way who offer to help. I liked that each place wasn’t quite the right fit, which made the story feel a little more meaningful than just a simple “everything works out” ending.

It naturally brings in themes of kindness, helping others, and also understanding that not every space is meant for you—and that’s okay. It opens the door for some really good conversations with kids without feeling heavy.

The winter setting makes it feel extra cozy, and it has just enough adventure to keep little ones engaged without losing their attention. My 4 year old was really into it the whole time, and my 8 year old thought it was a cute story too.

Overall, just a really warm, comforting read with a great message about resilience and finding where you belong.

This was a cute story that would be good for a school librarian to add to their collection. The illustrations are colorful and inviting. I liked the journey and the different characters. I would recommend this book as a read aloud.

This is a lovely book about animals welcoming a squirrel who lost her home. No fights, no drama, just a lot of open-hearted animals. The moral is about the importance of a home where you belong, but also about trying to be kind to your neighbors.
