Description
After six cancer diagnoses, Anette DeMattio learned something we’re rarely taught: our bodies aren’t betraying us — they’re communicating.
We don’t become strong by accident.
But the way we’ve been strong may be costing us.
If you’re the one who holds everything together—at work, at home, in your relationships—you already know what this feels like.
You step up.
You push through.
You carry more than you should.
And for a while… it works. Until it doesn’t.
Too Strong For Your Own Good explores what happens when the strength that helped you survive becomes the very thing that disconnects you from yourself.
Because it’s the only way you learned to be.
Through five powerful survival patterns—
The First Responder.
The Empty Cup.
The Cart Puller.
The Stoic Swan.
The Island.
—readers begin to recognize the hidden ways they’ve abandoned themselves in the name of being strong.
You’ll recognize yourself in one before you finish the first chapter.
And this book shows you how to shift those patterns—
without losing your drive, your ambition, or who you are.
Not by doing less.
By stopping what’s costing you.
Too Strong For Your Own Good is a compassionate, psychologically insightful guide for high achievers, caregivers, leaders, and anyone exhausted from carrying too much for too long.
If something in you is already recognizing this…you’re right on time.

A truly heart warming and breathtaking masterpiece written by Annette DeMattio. Beautifully structured and executed. From the start you feel engaged and drawn to the book. A lot of research and thought has gone into this book. This will inspire you and make you believe in yourself while showing you certain techniques which will help you. I have started using them and yes they do work.
Great guide for anyone who has been the one to pull everyone through.
Thank you to NetGalley for the read.
If you have spent your life being the dependable, overachieving, 'always-there-for-everyone' person, you need to read this book immediately. Anette DeMattio’s writing is beautifully raw, drawing from her own staggering experiences with medical trauma and high-functioning burnout. Her breakdown of the five survival patterns—especially the 'First Responder' and 'Stoic Swan'—hit so close to home I felt completely exposed. This book isn't about telling you to just 'do less.' Instead, it introduces the incredible REAL You Activation System to help you stop overriding your body's signals and alchemize that survival energy into genuine, soul-led power. I would recommend this book to anyone who is deeply tired in a way that sleep simply cannot fix. An absolute masterpiece!
