Description

Caring for a loved one facing a terminal illness can feel overwhelming, but A Caregiver’s Guide to Palliative Medicine gives you the knowledge and confidence to act decisively. Dr. Taylor, a seasoned physician with decades of experience in internal medicine, cardiology, and hospice care—and a noteworthy teacher—explains complex medical issues in clear, practical terms.

It is a medical book for those without medical training, describing specific illnesses and treatments. If browsing, check the chapter describing your “patient’s” illness, and you will get the idea. This disease-oriented chapter, together with Chapter 1, covers the realities of end-of-life care and equips you to make informed decisions every step of the way.

Whether you’re a spouse, family member, or friend, this compassionate, accessible guide transforms caregiving into a role you can embrace with skill, clarity, and peace of mind.

A Note From the Publisher

Dr. George Taylor has had a 50-year career as a clinician, medical educator, and writer. In addition to his cardiology practice, he has worked as a hospice doctor and has published research on end-of-life (EOL) care of heart failure. His introductory text, A Clinician's Guide to Palliative Care, was well-received by caregivers who lack medical training. A Caregiver's Guide is an expanded and updated version written specifically for family caregivers who have not had medical training. Professor Taylor recently retired from the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina, and lives with his wife on Johns Island, SC.

Advance Praise

"As Taylor so beautifully puts it, “dying is the ultimate transformative experience; unlike birth, we are aware of it.” A thorough and detailed guide that will aid the relatives of dying patients in their decision-making." - Kirkus Reviews

"This isn’t a pocket comfort object. It’s a manual for the person who may be standing between a dying patient and a medical system that often defaults reflexively toward more intervention.[...] But as a guide to the questions caregivers need to ask, the choices they may face, and the vocabulary they’ll need to survive those conversations, A Caregiver’s Guide to Palliative Medicine is clear, practical, and unusually grounded. It respects caregivers enough to tell them the truth without being saccharine or condescending: end-of-life care can feel impossible, and most of us will face it at some point. Understanding the medicine won’t make grief easier, but it can make the work less bewildering." - Independent Book Review

"This guide benefits from the experience of seasoned professionals and will provide sound guidance to those already involved in palliative care, or family members faced with the challenge of caring for a loved one who is terminally ill. It is practical and easy to read, with medical conditions and the appropriate care described in detail in layman’s terms. An informative glossary of medical terms rounds off an outstanding publication." - Reader's Favorite
