From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—Hoopmann explores the complicated subject of anxiety, including many of its causes and symptoms and different coping mechanisms, in this compact, accessible title. The book is composed of colorful and often humorous photographs of various types of birds, accompanied by simple sentences about day-to-day life with anxiety. For example, a page about feeling nervous in crowds is paired with an image of a large colony of penguins. This lighthearted approach helps make a complex topic child-friendly and easy to understand. Readers are provided with an overview of the daily feelings and challenges associated with apprehension. Suggested solutions are also presented. Hoopmann encourages readers to face what scares them and see it as something that can be managed. By offering an empathetic and relatable look at anxiety, this resource can help promote mental health awareness among children and their families. VERDICT A fine addition to school libraries and guidance counselor offices.—Kathryn Justus, Renbrook School, West Hartford, CT

A very worried little snowy owl looks out from the cover of this exceptional picture book. In wonderfully expressive photographs and short bursts of text, we learn a lot about anxiety...Not sleeping, feeling groggy or panicky, not being able to cope with ordinary tasks - all of these are talked about in simple terms with amazing photos of birds illustrating the problems involved... This is a book that could be used by anyone from about 9 upwards (adults as well) and will provide humour as well as serious content. — Healthy Books, healthybooks.org.uk

Anxiety is a highly topical and pertinent issue, since it is being identified as a barrier to social inclusion and learning for more and more children. The book explores its complexities in an innovative way, using different types of birds to beautifully illustrate the fears that anxiety might produce, the thoughts and emotions that can arise, and crucially, what children could do that might help them to manage these more effectively. — Helen Punter-Bruce, Special Children

Building on All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome and All Dogs Have ADHD, Hoopmann uses stock photographs of dozens of birds to convey aspects of life with anxiety. The project relies heavily on anthropomorphism-namely reading worry, frustration, and fear in the faces and body language of eagles, penguins, and other birds, none of which are identified. 'When stress builds up, anything can set off anxiety, such as: a change of plan, something new, a comment, a thought. Stuff,' writes Hoopmann beside an image of a horned owl, its wide, orange eyes meant to signal extreme alarm. The text and images are well paired, but 50 pages of stressed-and-depressed-looking birds and their 'symptoms' ('Wide-awake thoughts churn in our minds') is a lot to wade through before Hoopmann begins to suggest ways to combat anxiety in the final third of the book. Ages 4-up. (Mar.) — Publishers Weekly

Kathy's wonderful book is a powerful educational resource for parents and teachers alike. This book normalises the experience of anxiety, it explains how worry happens and how it affects us, but it also gives hope on how to overcome worry, stress, and fear. It helps children and adults overcome self-doubt and life challenges. The beautiful images are carefully selected, displaying common emotions amongst all living beings. I strongly recommend this fun book to children of all ages, educators and parents.— Dr Paula Barrett, International Author of the Friends Resilience Programs, www.friendsresilience.org

Once again, I am in awe of Kathy's ability to make the seemingly complicated, simple and accessible for all. Anxiety runs deep in our society - sometimes emerging as a pattern, and impacting on a negative way in our classrooms, home places and work places. 'All Birds Have Anxiety' is a wonderfully engaging resource that reminds us how to recognise the symptoms of anxiety in ourselves and others. She provides practical advice on how to acknowledge and deal with this emotion effectively. Not only will this book benefit the children that access it, but so too will it remind the adults in their lives of effective strategies that we can employ for ourselves and model for the children in our care. I will be recommending this resource as part of an intervention strategy to be implemented by parents, teachers and therapists of children that are facing challenges in managing anxiety. So too will I recommend it for use as part of a pro-active approach to promoting and maintaining positive mental health in our schools. — Gráinne Boyle, Educational Psychologist and Director of The Innovation Hub, Dubai

Useful for discussion on anxiety, how it manifests and different ways of dealing with it. Oh - and the pictures will make you smile a lot! — Janet Dowling, The School Librarian

Whilst anxiety is a normal and universally experienced emotion, problems with anxiety are becoming increasingly common in children. Anxiety affects many aspects of children's functioning. Children who experience excessive anxiety find it more difficult to learn, and they feel uncomfortable socially. Anxiety can take the fun out of childhood. In the book, All Birds Have Anxiety Kathy Hoopmann creatively communicates in a developmentally appropriate way information about anxiety, how it affects people and most importantly what can be done to manage it. Using beautiful pictures and carefully crafted words, All Birds Have Anxiety is an excellent book that will enable adults to discuss anxiety with children and together develop better strategies to cope with this difficult emotion. — Associate Professor James Scott, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research

With their mix of words and pictures Kathy Hoopmann's books have always put a smile on my face even as they've explained complex and sometimes scary issues in terms any child can understand. All Cat's Have Asperger's made autism relatable to thousands of children. Her new book on anxiety promises to do the same for a much more common condition that all of us know, and many of us live with. — John Elder Robison, NY Times Bestselling author, Look Me in the Eye and Switched On; Neurodiversity Scholar, The College of William & Mary

A very kind, informative and encouraging book about anxiety. The fitting photographs of birds in various anxious situations was helpful to understand the emotion and funny. Would definitely recommend.

Silly, quirky and funny from the get go. This picture book shows the reader it's okay to take life unseriously.

This book is for breaking ice on the topic of anxiety, opening a conversation aimed at kids (or adults who vehemently deny the reality of anxiety), and having a light hearted moment of being seen/validated in your experience of anxiety. However, this is not a medical journal or a serious book on the subject, which in itself is much nuanced and deep. It would not do justice to stop your exploration with this explanation of anxiety, but it definitely is a good starting point.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
As one who has anxiety, this book is very relatable. I think this book is great for anyone, if they have anxiety or not. It hits the highlights and lowlights of how anxiety affects people.
The birds pictures are fun and I like that the end of the book tells what kind of birds were pictured.

I love this book.

Hoopman does an exceptional job of clearly explaining the feelings and physical symptoms of anxiety in a way that can be understood by children and yet also helpful for adults. She provides strategies for managing stress and anxiety. This approach is wonderfully non-threatening and offers a helpful way to cope with those worrisome feelings.

The accompanying bird photos are beautiful and perfectly illustrate the ideas being discussed. Some are incredibly cute, even comical, and are sure to bring smiles to the faces of children and adults alike.

This book is an excellent resource for parents, counselors and teachers. It is part of the All Animals series that explores other topics such as autism spectrum and ADHD.

This is an accessible and relatable introduction to anxiety. It does a good job of explaining the differences between anxiety and an anxiety disorder

It manages to capture the massiveness of it without downplaying how it affects people

For a small book it took a nuanced and compassionate approach to anxiety

A really great book that delves into all things 'anxiety'.
Although this might have been aimed at children to explain the feeling of anxiety, it was a gentle reminder for this big kid, that her anxiety is normal, and to be kind to herself.

Thank you, Net Galley, for the Advanced Readers Copy of this book. It was extremely cute while explaining anxiety on a level that children could easily understand. This book is long overdue for kids struggling and unable to put into words how they are feeling.

Similar to Inside Out 2, this picture book does an amazing job explaining anxiety to kids, here using some very funny photographs of birds looking less-than-majestic. The book both describes common symptoms as well as providing realistic tools to help. Wish I had this as a kid to put into words what I so often felt.

This is the third in a series of books explaining behavior. Of the three, the cats with autism, the dogs with ADHD, this one is the best of the three. The reason why is that it gives some steps to deal with anxiety. Ya know there is that old joke punchline: Give them some chicken soup. A chicken is a bird, right? To help with anxiety, have a bowl of chicken soup. Good for you, but not so good for the chicken. No wonder all birds have anxiety. So would I.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC! I love this book! It's just what my inner child needs to hear, to make me feel like I'm not alone in my anxiety, and it makes the subject approachable. I think it is wonderful for both kids *and* their parents. The pictures are the perfect addition, too. Such a unique concept for a book. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series!

All Birds Have Anxiety: An affirming introduction to anxiety is a lovely nonfiction book by award-winning author, Kathy Hoopmann. It fits nicely into her All Animals series, which includes All Cats Are on the Autism Spectrum: An affirming introduction to autism and All Dogs Have ADHD: An affirming introduction to ADHD. All three books are written so that children can understand complex medical terms using animals. The bird photographs are charming, and even children too young to read will enjoy looking at the pictures.

I ordered the last published version (2017) in ebook format to compare with this newest edition. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed. It was an excellent book in 2017 and it's an excellent book in 2026. The photographs are beautiful, the captions are well written, and this book is perfect for readers of any age. Adults can read it to younger children, school-aged children can read it for themselves, and anyone will enjoy having this book in their collection.

I particularly loved this book because I have anxiety, and it can be hard to explain why I don't do the things I love, cancel plans, and am always stressed. All Birds Have Anxiety: An affirming introduction to anxiety soothed my soul as I read it. The photos were perfectly chosen to match the words on each page; they made me smile.

Whether the reader knows someone with anxiety, or just loves birds, it will make an excellent gift. I wish I'd had a copy sooner. That said, I plan to gift all three of my adult children with copies of all three books because they are children's books that are still relevant for adults. I highly recommend all three books, but this one is by far my favorite of the series.

All Birds Have Anxiety is an informative children's book on anxiety. It explains common feelings of anxiety, as well as the debilitating side of anxiety. All while being presented with wonderful professional photographs with birds. I do love how the author ends with that there are coping tools and mechanisms available to anyone with anxiety.

A special thank you to NetGalley, Kathy Hoopmann and John Murray Press for the complimentary copy.

Kathy Hoopmann's books All Cats Are on the Autism Spectrum, All Birds Have Anxiety, and All Dogs Have ADHD are such a gift. They take big, often misunderstood topics and make them feel approachable, kind, and full of heart.

What makes these books truly great is how they raise awareness for the general public without ever feeling heavy. They show, in the sweetest way, that people experience the world differently and that those differences deserve understanding, not judgment. For kids especially, these books are a gentle doorway into empathy. They make it easy to talk about neurodiversity and emotions in a way that feels safe and even fun.

And the artwork... honestly, it's adorable. The cute photos soften everything, making the messages land with warmth instead of worry. It's hard to read them without smiling.

A lovely, meaningful trio that teaches compassion with charm.

My 8 year old was diagnosed with anxiety when she was 6. Its likely been brought on by her epilepsy, but any book for her age group I can get my hands on about anxiety, I do. This book was great to read with her. It makes these big feelings that in previous generations were generally ignored or mislabeled, feel less isolating for someone her age. The pictures were great and at times had us both giggling. 10/10 would recommend.

Thank you to Netgalley and John Murray Press / Sheldon Press for providing me with an Advanced Copy to review! All opinions in this review are my own.

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Being with those who listen to us and accept us makes a world of difference.”

What I Liked:
🩷Relatable for anyone who has anxiety
🩷Simple sentences to help children understand such a large feeling
🩷Adorable and entertaining pictures

What I Didn’t Like:
🩷No Introduction like the other books in this series: All Dogs Have ADHD and All Cats Are on the Autism Spectrum.
🩷More from a first person point of view rather than a third person – which worked for myself as someone with anxiety but not for explaining to others what anxiety is.
🩷Wouldn’t load on my kindle system to read

I enjoyed this book. I think it covers an important topic for kids to get an understanding of anxiety. I think it is especially important if the child's family has a history of anxiety. It would offers kids necessary information that they could use if it ever came up. My one critique of the book is the length. On one hand, like I said, it's helpful information and the book is thorough. On the other hand, it's long, and even I, as an adult, was getting a little bored. Other than that, it was great.
