I have consulted with hundreds of entrepreneurs during my career. The most successful build a community of raving fans who love them and what they do. Wendy Keller’s book is the best I have read on building a strong platform to grow your fan base. It covers all the relevant tools: social media, podcasts, videos, blogs, speeches, and workshops. It is a must read for aspiring entrepreneurs, business owners, and company executives. In this age of technology acceleration, I don’t think it is possible to build a great business without strong platform-building skills. The positioning tips in Chapter 4 all by themselves are worth the price of admission. The Ultimate Guide to Platform Building is a step-by-step manual to building a tangible presence in a competitive marketplace that raises your fees and causes demand to rise. If you use this book as your “make sure we don’t miss anything in our public presence” manual, you’ll never make a major omission. She covers vital details like audio production and what colors to wear in a video shoot—something I’ve never seen in a book of this type. It’s comprehensive.

One of the trends I note heavily for businesses of all shapes and sizes in the future is how we are entering a new creative age driven by a D.I.Y. ethos unleashed due to platform technology. Wendy Keller uses a very personal approach to help you become a solopreneur or small-business owner who doesn’t look at the world of entrepreneurship as an obstacle, but an advantage. Ultimate Guide to Platform Building by Wendy Keller. I found this to be a very informative book. I suspect I will be reading it again as I build my platform and need the specific instructions.
Some of the highlights I want to share are:
* Building your customer avatar – Some of the best information I have read on building my avatar. I literally used the information while in the chapter to create her. This information is critical since you can use it when you decide where to spend your advertising dollars. In addition, your material will be better and more personal when you know who you are communicating with.
* Using analytics to determine customer acquisition costs – This is a section that I think many of us forget to do. It is critical when starting a new venture to be cost conscious. Understanding who your customer is and where they are, can help with decreasing your cost to convert them to customers.
* Spying on the competition- Really a fancy way to research your competition to see what works well for them and what you can do better. You can also find your audience through theirs.
* Defining your Unique Selling Position (USP)- Wendy shares tips on how to determine your USP.
* Give things away for free to engage the Rule of Reciprocity- interesting discussion on the psychological side of reciprocity.
I recommend the book especially if you are new to this type of promotion. Wendy shares a wide range of days so I am confident that some of the would work for almost every idea/product/service.

I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review.

For those entrepreneurs that have started their business based on a great idea or a specific need in the market but who cannot seem to get the business to find the momentum to move forward the concept of platform building may seem like a foreign concept. However, this concept is crucial for any business to have staying and growing power for any extended period of time. This new book by Wendy Keller covers all aspects of platform building, it provides a ton ideas and resources to help you the reader to put these ideas and concepts into life.
Over the last year, I have several books on the subject and this book is by far the most generous in terms of volume of ideas as well as depth Keller goes into different topics. There are things where the book doesn't provide the concrete details, but then there are web links provided to Keller's own company's website where the material and examples are provided.
I found the book to be incredibly valuable and detailed. I know I will be going back to it over and over for ideas when building and expanding the platforms for my own businesses.
