Description

Cady Adams has had a crush on Dex McCoy since high school, but her ambitions were always bigger than the small Montana town they grew up in. In the years after, Cady headed to California and Dex ended up drifting from one job to another all over the US.

But when the rug is pulled from under her feet, Cady comes home to establish her business, Cady’s Cakes. What she doesn’t know is a family tragedy has pulled Dex home, too, and he’s taken a new job as a smokejumper.

Will they finally give in to what’s been burning between them for so long? Is the timing right to find out the dreamer and the drifter are really perfect for each other?

There are times Dex has to rephrase things because the man gets it wrong the first time, “no, that’s not what I meant. I’m not saying I want you to go. I’m saying you should come wait inside while I take a shower. And then I’ll get you a beer. Okay?” I liked this book, Dex was a real great guy, and Cady had a big heart

Book 5 in the Firefighters of Montana series, Flame is another great weekend read, and like the other four in this series it stands alone well.
I was particularly amazed at the amount of research Australian author Victoria Purman must have done in order to so accurately describe the lives and experience of smokejumpers dealing with wild fires. We have bushfires here too, but nothing like these infernos that seem to hit north America so regularly.
This book is not, however, a treatise on the life of a smokejumper. Rather it is a really entertaining love story packed into a novella sized parcel. It also examines the walls that we put up around ourselves when life hasn't treated us right in the past. In the cases of Dex and Cady, it was fun watching them chip away at each other's walls until they reached their inevitable happy ever after and, of course, it was a darned good read.

It seems that I started with the last book, #5, in the Firefighters of Montana series to read first. So without a doubt I can say that Flame by Victoria Purman reads very well on its own. The other couples especially the female part of the couples are mentioned in this book but it only serves to make you want to read their stories. I liked this couple of Dex and Cady who are Montana born and breed. Theirs is a sweet story with a wonderful side second story of Dex’s niece’s recovery after a fall.

The characters are likable with no true villains unless you count the wildfires that start up on a regular basis in the novella. As for pacing the plot is mostly okay. I felt a couple of times it was choppy, especially since I didn’t see why these two had trouble connecting. It was never clear to me why Dex wouldn’t ask Cady out instead avoiding her. The past didn’t seem strong enough to warrant such a reaction from Dex, who was a great son, brother and phenomenal uncle. Still I liked the characters who were hard working, loyal and just good people so it made reading their story worthwhile.

**3.5 stars**
Dex McCoy is coming back to his home town after a three month secondment to another fire fighting unit. Cady Adams still has him in her thoughts, years after he rejected her drunken advances. Can they overcome their differences and move on together?

Being a novella this is an easy, fast read. I picked this book to read as I have really enjoyed many of Victoria Purman's other novels, although this is the 5th book in the Montana Firefighter Series and I haven't read any others. I found the time line of story a little confusing in the beginning, 4 years, 1 year, 3 months....significant things in Dex and Cady's life all happened around these times but once I settled into the story it made sense. This is a typical romantic HEA type book of longings, misunderstandings and coming together. As a reader we all know how it's going to end, it's just the journey that we have to take with the characters. I liked that there wasn't a really big 'angst' moment, just a understanding of what really happened all those years ago.......perfect for losing yourself for a few hours.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for a copy to read and review.

Cady, the bake shop owner, and Dex, the firefighter, make a good couple. A little sluggish at times though, and I didn't quite get the point of the nightmares that popped up all of a sudden, and then not pursued farther. I liked the little niece too, and wished she would have been in there even more. She added a nice domestic touch to the story. Would highly recommend this book, and although it is number 5 in a series (I have only read this one and #4) I was not lost at all. A good quick read for the upcoming summer.

Cady returned to Montana for a new business. Dex returned home after tragedy and took a job as a smokejumper. These two find a new future together. Good addition to the series with Montana and the town.
Ebook from Netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.

Dex McCoy was Cady Adam’s crush since high school Day before Cady was leaving for california, she finally found a courage to throw herself at Dex via whiskey but she was rejected. That was last time she ever saw Dex.
Years later, Cady comes back to Montana and opens Cady’s Cakes. Dex was away as well but he was back in Montana to help his brother’s family. She knew Dex was back being smokejumper but never set a foot in her store to say simple hello.
After weeks of avoiding each other, both were finally faced with each other and both’s encounter of last night at the Bar was different. Cady misunderstood the whole situation and so did Dex. Now they wanted to pursue what they both wondered before. But when Dex was called in for his duty, it worries Cady and she couldn’t handle losing another person yet again so she decides to give up on their relationship before it moved further....
What will both do?? She still care for each other but his job scares Cady and she doesn’t want to risk her heart again...... Will he drift away again like he did before.
