Description

Doctor Leonid Altshuler, a U.S. board-certified psychiatrist, went through years of misdiagnosis and suffering from high blood pressure, digestion problems, anxiety and insomnia, before he discovered an innate connection between diet, insulin resistance and physical and mental illnesses.

Having absolutely normal weight and normal blood sugar does not always mean that person does not have insulin resistance.

70 million Americans are affected by insulin resistance.

In fact, more than 40% of people older than 50 years have a high risk of developing insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a major risk factor leading to heart attacks, diabetes, hypertension, cancer and dementia.

Dietary habits are a leading cause of insulin resistance. Dr. Altshuler has developed a diet he has been successfully using in his treatment of many of his patients. His diet consists of two parts.

The first part is designed to normalize the body’s response to the hormone insulin, to get rid of insulin resistance.

The second part is designed by the patients themselves and is based on personal preferences. It is designed to keep their symptoms away.

This diet can be adapted for vegetarians, vegans and all meat eaters.  If you want a fast and effective way to improve your mental and physical health this book is for you.

ALT diet, Common Sense diet by Doctor Leonid Altshuler is a book about insulin resistance and diet. I found this book helpful in understanding the link between diet and good health. I intend to follow Dr Altshuler's suggestions to see if this diet can work for me. I would like to thank NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

As a vegetarian, I wanted to read this book to know something new or any new thing I could do to improve my diet while still eating and being healthy.
The author draws from a lot of his personal experiences with insulin, diet, high blood pressure and also the aspect of committing to a diet. It is a short book, not overly commercialized, but has a more personal feel and offers insights on what to do, what works and how to stick to it. Thanks NetGalley for the eARC.

Very much a re-run of his book 'Hypertension, Blood Sugar? Depression?: How I Cured Them All'. Yet a good reminder of the ways in which Dr Altshuler treated his own, and his patients, mental and physical health problems by using a holistic approach of diet and mental exercises.

Insulin sensitivity - or the lack of sensitivity - is now known to be behind a lot of today's health problems, including obesity, heart problems and diabetes, but Dr Altshuler is the first doctor, that I have heard of, who is also working with it in a physciatric setting. He has found that insulins inability to cross the blood-brain barrier can exacerbate mental health problems.

Worthy of reading.

"ALT Diet" is a short book by a mental health professional who found personal relief from high blood pressure and anxiety by cutting carbs out of his diet. The book is quite interesting, although i do have a number of questions after reading outta, and need too do further research. For example, what about necessary vitamins and nutrients that aren't available through a meat-only diet? Dr. Sprinkler clearly states in the first pages of the book that this diet is simply what worked for him, as well as for family members and a number of his patients. He stresses that no one diet is universal, however, and what worked for him may not work for others. His information on hypoglycemia and pre-diabetes makes good sense, but again, the book does bring up a number of questions about the scientific basis behind why and how this no carb diet improves health. I especially liked the section of the book on quieting oneself for half an hour a day, and incorporating mindfulness into morning routines. The author is obviously a person who truly hopes to help others. And although the book is short and written somewhat in a personal journal format, I found it thought provoking and definitely worth the read. Thanks to the publisher who provided me with a free electronic copy of the book via NetGalley. I was not required to write a review of any kind. The opinions here are my own.

Dieting books are very popular this year. I was chosen to review ALT DIet: Commonsense Diet, Revolutionary Approach by Dr Leonid Altshuler. Dr. Althsuler really brings the topics of insulin resistance an prediabetes to the reader in clear, easy to follow instructions on how to correct them.I really feel that Dr Altshuler went into great detail to explain the basics of insulin and insulin resistance, especially in the brain.

There are some gentle ways of correcting insulin resistance and some not so gentle ways...Primarily meat based, the Alt Diet recommends two steps to get your body back to a healthier state. The first is stricter than Atkins as it involves just meat and specific types. The second slowly adds in low glycemic carbohydrate as the body tolerates. I like that Dr Altshuler included a section on how stress impacts the body.

The best part of the book was the first half where Dr Altshuler delves into how the body works and writes in ways that are very reader friendly (as opposed to doctor friendly). More than anything I learned so much more about how my body works.

Thank you to NetGalley, BooksGoSocial, and Dr. Leonid Altshuler for this reader copy for me to review. I appreciate the hard work that went into getting this book off the ground! As always, my opinions are my own.
