Nice book! Very well organized and the photos are mouth-watering! It looks like a grandma cookbook! There are some recipes that I would try to recreate but honestly I would prefer going to their restaurant to eat it there. The recipes seems a little hard for everyday cooking, I would make them for special occasions. The instructions are long but well explained. I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

I wasn’t familiar with the Little Owl restaurant before hearing about this book. I’m now absolutely sure that I’d love to eat there.

I wanted to check out this cookbook because the Pork Chop with Parmesan Butter Beans sounded amazing. And wait till you see the picture.

Speaking of pictures, I sound like a broken record but I always think cookbooks could benefit from more pictures. That’s the case here too.

I thought many of the recipes sounded delicious but some of then sounded like a major time investment. So, this cookbook is geared more towards people willing to put extra time into making a really nice dinner. I love to cook, and I respect that time investment, but I’d like to just go to his restaurant and eat the amazing Looking dish with manicotti style crepes.

I liked the way the recipes included little stories. They had a little paragraph or so of a back story, it was interesting without being too much.

The way the chef “talks” makes me feel like I can trust him to explain the recipes’ steps to me.

There’s a green bean recipe called Sesame Green Beans that I may try tonight .

I got to read an early ebook edition from NetGalley. Thank you!

Let’s just say I hope this tiny little restaurant made it through this pandemic because I can’t say enough about this cookbook. I would love to sit at a table and order some of these mouth watering recipes. I am so absolutely amazed and hungry after making it through this cookbook not to mention humbled.

What did I like? I’m Italian food lover at heart and the combination of recipes..pictures, and stories just make this a wonderful book. There is all sorts of tidbits and founts of information in this book that just make me want it, not to mention the mouth watering pictures. The author also includes stories of his child hood and how the Little Owl restaurant came to be. How to butcher a chicken, and a cute song playlist. I just fell in love with this cookbook and added to my wish list on amazon! It doesn’t come out until September but I can’t wait to try the recipes.

Would I recommend or buy? YES...YES...YES. It’s on my buy list and I’m definitely getting a copy. All the recipes look delicious and it’s a five star recommendation too. The stories pull me in, the recipes look amazing, and given the fact that you could potentially visit the restaurant just makes this a winning combo. I just fangirl it... looks positively divine.

Thoughts for the author? I would love a signed copy! I rarely get an author to respond to my reviews but it does occasionally occur ...but this is one author I would love a copy from. Five amazing cookbook stars. Loved everything about it. Thanks so much for a sneak peek! Thanks to the publisher for an ARC to read and give my honest opinion!

This cookbook was more than just a "cookbook." In addition to crisp/clean photography and being well-organized, I loved the shoutouts to mom/mom-mom, the photos from the past/present, and the anecdotes. Campanaro celebrates big love cooking...and bringing people together for a delicious meal-- because that's what eating and living well are all about. I'm looking forward to trying out more than a few recipes. In fact...I'm hungry now.

I really liked this cookbook, especially due to all the yummy recipes and great photos. It's a bit pasta oriented, but as a pasta lover, I didn't mind at all. One of the recipes I'd love to try is the Spaghetti and Clams, and I'm really tempted to purchase a physical copy of this book.

This whole book felt like a homemade meal at grandma’s house. It’s warm & inviting, a lot of food to share & eat, everyone telling stories. I love it! The recipes are easy to follow, there’s pictures, and there’s a variety of dishes to choose from. Thanks to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for an ebook ARC. This is my honest review.

Sometimes a cookbook is more than a cookbook. Foodies love cookbooks, and foodies love reading about food and recipes. Foodies especially love cooking out of good cookbooks, and Joey Campanaro, restaurateur and lifelong lover of cooking, has written a cookbook to satisfy all of a foodie’s needs. Big Love Cooking: 75 Recipes for Satisfying, Shareable Comfort Food has dozens of mouthwatering Italian dishes from Campanaro’s childhood, but also includes plenty of non-Italian recipes that he serves at his restaurants.

Campanaro has included a section on ingredients, basic equipment, and some of his thoughts on food – not too much, so it’s easy to read through. Then to the recipes which have a story, vignette, or explanation before every recipe. This makes it a fun read, even if one isn’t cooking. But as readers get further in the book, the recipes will inspire anyone to make a recipe or two. Although there aren’t pictures of every recipe, there are beautiful photographs of many of the dishes, making it impossible to forego cooking. There are also photographs of Campanaro’s neighborhood. The actual recipes are easy-to-follow, some with a few notes from the author to insure success. Most of the recipes are simple, too, making it possible for everyone to successfully make the recipes. Some successful chefs write cookbooks that intimidate the reader and call for difficult-to-find ingredients or difficult cooking skills. Campanaro presents his recipes in such a way that readers will feel that he is just a neighbor giving his recipe to a friend.

Of course the first recipe to make is the signature dish served at The Owl, Campanaro’s restaurant, Gravy Meatball Sliders, and it is absolutely delicious. Adapting the buns to the automatic bread machine saved time, and the meatballs and sauce were simple. This recipe is reason enough to own this fun cookbook. Foodies everywhere will want to add this cookbook to their cookbook shelf, and since there is something here for everyone, cooks everywhere will want to pick it up.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

I can't cook most of these recipes (Campanaro loves his meat and I cook mostly vegetarian, and I also cook gluten free, which this book is definitely not) but that doesn't stop me from appreciating everything about it. The author is a celebrated chef with several restaurants (The Tiny Owl is the one most often mentioned in this book, which happens to be downstairs from the famous apartment from Friends). He talks often of his Italian American upbringing in Philadelphia and the book is filled with stories, memories, cooking lessons, and amazing food that will take you hours to cook but will be worth it. Color photos accompany about half the recipes. A fantastic resource.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

Wow! What a well-written cook book with so many different options. I absolutely love the variety in this cook book and that it incorporates comfort food with health! I cannot wait to put some of these recipes to the test.

Caution: Do not read while hungry. Everything sounds delicious!

This cookbook is for serious eaters. And serious chefs!

I love the format - with straight talk about ingredients and cooking essentials. I love the stories behind the chef and his recipes. I love the photography - of the food and of the Little Owl restaurant. And I love the range of categories and recipes within each.

What I do not love is the amount of cooking required for each recipe. Ha! I would love to eat at Little Owl. And I would love to have Joey Campanaro cook for me any day of the week. I’m just not sure that I am up for cooking any of these recipes myself. The nuances and details are all perfect ... it just seems like a lot of work for the average home cook. Still, the cookbook would be a wonderful addition to any collection.

If you ever visit my house you may notice that I have a big bookshelf full of cookbooks in my kitchen. I love browsing through cookbooks and bookmarking recipes that I want to try. And occasionally, I even get around to trying them. I love cookbooks with easy to follow recipes and great photography.

Big Love Cooking by Joey Campanaro definitely fits the bill. This cook book contains 75 recipes inspired by the cuisine at his popular NYC restaurant Little Owl. There are many Italian recipes in this book for anything from brunch fare to soup and salad, veggies, main courses and desserts. I probably bookmarked around 20 recipes on my first go through the book and added a few ingredients to my online shopping cart so I can try out some of them. Up first we will try the snickerdoodles with salted caramel and the halibut with pesto.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for approachable yet elevated Italian fare inspiration.

Big Love Cooking by Joey Campanaro is an amazing cookbook by the owner of Little Owl Restaurant in New York City. The book provides 75 recipes, including the pork chop and parmesan butter beans, one of Little Owl's most popular dishes. There is a recipe for the spice mix Campanaro uses in many of Little Owl's dishes, as well as brunch, lunch, dinner, and dessert recipes. What I loved most are the stories that accompany the recipes. Campanaro tells us all about his family, life, and restaurant as he teaches us how to make delicious food.

Many of the recipes are complicated, but I feel will be worth the effort and will make me a more experienced cook. I will definitely buy a hard copy of this one.

I received a digital copy from the publishers via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.

Big Love Cooking by Joey Campanaro is a lovely collection of comfort food dishes from Joey's Little Owl restaurant in Greenwich Village. A lot of the dishes originated in his mother's Italian kitchen in south Philadelphia others are Joey's own creations of savory dishes . There are 75 recipes covering breakfast, lunch and dinner. and lovely pictures of many of the dishes.

I was blown away by the number of appetizing recipes included in this book and I intend to try many of them. starting with Italian Wedding Soup, I also am excited to try Joey's special Farfalle with Broccoli Rabe Pesto, ((a dish Joey created in honor of his father) or the warm Radicchio with Pancetta and Gorgonzola,. And how could one not try the Little Owl Pork Chop,

Although I am an experienced cook, myself, I learned a lot from Joey about how to make food more savory and delicious starting with his Harrison Spice Mix, but also his pickled red onion and pickled fennel. I don't know Joey Campanaro, but I sure would like to meet him some day. His love of cooking is contagious.

I've never been to the Little Owl restaurant, but this charming cookbook makes me feel like I'm part of the neighborhood. There's a lot of recipes to elevate your home Italian cooking game. I like cookbooks that are filled with personal stories and background information, and this has just the right balance of stories and recipes. The pictures are great, too. There's a lot of recipes I want to try from this book - Rosie Bova's Fennel Biscotti recipe has me wanting to finally try baking biscotti. This is a really enjoyable cookbook that I'm sure I'll be revisiting for a long time to come.

Delicious sounding family style recipes that seem reasonably easy to prepare. Accompanied by beautifully presented photos of the food, but also Campanaro’s family and his Little Owl restaurant. I suspect I would have given five ⭐️ but the advanced copy (pdf) didn’t have all the story pages printed so I could read.

I enjoyed reading about the inspiration for the dishes featured in this cookbook and all the recipes were written in a, understandable manner. I liked the layout and the photos - I am a sucker for photos so I think there should be more photos, but the photos that are included are gorgeously staged. I am definitely thinking about buying a copy on release day.

I love the idea of a cookbook focused on shareable comfort food. Big Love Cooking did not disappoint! It has great photography, straightforward recipes, and ingredients that are easy to find. I will definitely be adding a lot of these recipes to my rotation and will be buying a physical copy for future use.

Joey Campanaro's book is simply delicious. Let me start by saying that the pictures on this book are probably the best pictures I have seen in a cookbook; I wanted to eat each page with a picture of food in it. The recipes are a perfect balance between casualness and thoughtful preparation: what a home cooked meal feels like, in other words. I also loved the family stories and pictures included, it definitely adds a touch of heritage and gratitude.
I had the pleasure of trying his dishes when I visited his restaurant, 'The Little Owl", about 10 years ago. I confess, I went there for the photo op of being the restaurant in the building shown to be Monica and Rachel's apartment in Friends. However, when I stood next to the door for the picture, and I the smell from the food hit me, I started salivating and simply had to try it. I was so glad I did!

It would have been easier to use this book if it was not strictly in a PDF format and I was able to download it to Kindle. I did have a chance to look through and the recipes seem easy to use and the pictures are nice.
The one recipe I tried was comprehensive and did not require a lot of effort and turned out good in the end.

The dishes presented are tantalizing, but the book, at least in digital form, is difficult to use. The author continually references other recipes on other pages, but there are no quick links to get there. The same problem exists with the table of contents, which at least on the Pocketbooks app, doesn’t have links, forcing the reader to thumb through a hundred pages to find things. Aside from links there are other problems. Heart of palm is described as being cut lengthwise instead of crosswise as pictured. Photos are too few with many recipes having none at all. Also forcing readers to go back to page 18 from deep in the book is ridiculous, especially when there are no page numbers, and when the item on the alleged page 18 is found, it consists of salt and two types of pepper that could have been included as part of the recipe. The book has potential, but is woefully short of a reference book that the consumer can use to successfully replicate dishes. Instead it is another celebrity cookbook that remains more self/ congratulatory than useful.

Just looking at the pictures in this book, made me hungry. Illustrations were beautiful, The recipes were easy to follow, and the stories that accompany them made the book delightful.. For all the Italians, and New Yorkers, wherever they are, should get a copy of this. Makes you want to invite the family over for a big dinner.

A great cookbook! I love to read cookbooks, and this one definitely makes me hungry. Interesting recipes, mouth-watering photos (although I wish there were more of them), and interesting anecdotes and background info on the recipes. Yesterday, I made the Italian Wedding Soup yesterday, which was superb! I look forward to making many of the other dishes highlighted here.

I requested this book thinking the recipes would feed a crowd. Maybe I misread the promotional copy? Maybe I was confused by "Big Love" -- thinking of the TV show and large family meals. I was surprised when most recipes were scaled to serve 4-6. I've made note of a few to try -- always a good sign when looking at a cookbook.

I grew up in NY and the Little Owl has been a corner staple in the west village since 2006. Was excited to read Joey Campanaro's book and it did not disappoint. Felt nostalgic for me...it was beautifully put together. Loved the photography of family and food (and the included playlist!). Wonderful recipes and guides that tied together a heritage of cooking....would make a perfect book for holiday gift giving or a birthday! Loved it.

Big Love Cooking is more than a cookbook. It was a trip down memory lane for me. Joey Campanaro's tales of family life and city life in Philadelphia brought me back to my days of growing up in Boston in the 70's and early 80's. I enjoyed the stories so much!!! Then there's the food. Mamma Mia!!! It includes so many mouth-watering recipes with beautiful full color photos. The hardest part is what to make first. Veal Marsala, Chicken Cacciatore, Little Owl Crispy Chicken, Campanaro Family Lasagna (take me away!!), Eggplant Parmesan, a triple batch of Spicy Mexican Style Roasted Corn (starting to drool), If you can't make it to The Little Owl, this is the very next best thing. I was given an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley. Enjoyed it so much!

Big Love Cooking is an impressive assortment of delicious, fresh Italian-American recipes, suitable for the home kitchen and family feasts—many of them simple enough to prepare on busy weekday nights.. Campanaro, owner/chef of The Little Owl restaurant, accompanies his recipes with the stories behind the recipes and nostalgic affection for his South Philly roots and childhood neighborhood, imbuing personal significance to the food. I really appreciated the humorous, warm, personalIty that shines through the words, the attractive color pictures of the food, and Campanaro’s encouragement to his readers to “make the gravy your own”—that is, feel free to improvise, play around with the recipes, and personalize them. Warmly recommended!

Not your routine comfort foods are found in this book. Delicious meals and great recipes! We have enjoyed the meals and will be sharing with family and friends. Looking forward to trying new recipes each week.

While the title is deceiving, the end justifies the title. Really enjoyed the family togetherness.. I enjoyed the variety of dishes from pasta to meat to desserts

Excellent cookbook from one of America's top chefs. Campanaro shares his own recipe secrets and family memories associated with them. The experience of this cookbook is like you are being invited to his family's table. The illustrations are gorgeous and absolutely appetite-inducing. Campanaro also shares pantry how-tos including brands, types of ingredients (which salts to keep on hand for example), and the where and how of fresh herbs. He even details how to use the herbs properly I will be using this book to create my next grocery list and for planning my next herb garden! Delicious recipes, readers will want to try every single one.

Yes, you can find all kinds of recipes on Pinterest. But the cookbook is not dead and this is a perfect example of why. You can't learn cooking from Pinterest the way you can from this book. Highly recommend.

I was given an advance reader copy of this title on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Big Love Cooking by Joey Campanaro is an amazing cookbook by the owner of Little Owl Restaurant in New York City. I am hoping that this restaurant has survived these trying times because the next time I am in NYC visiting our grandson I am definitely making a reservation.

The book provides 75 Italian recipes that were passed down through his family and tweaked with his own flair. Definitely tons of comfort food which is awesome for this Italian. Most generational Italian cooks have tons of memories and stories that go with certain dishes. Well Joey does not disappoint. I love the way he phonetically says certain ingredients and dishes. (Schka-role) The stories resonate family and food.

Each recipe is created with a great deal of thought and experience. The photos are absolutely gorgeous. I wish there was one for every recipe.

I look forward to making these recipes and using this book. While there is time involved with each recipe (some might balk at that) I feel that “love” food is worth the time and effort. I can’t say enough about this cookbook. It is definitely something you should add to your cookbook collection. Absolutely five star recommendation. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next. Well done!

I would like to thank Joey Campanaro, Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This cookbook is an interesting mix of recipes. Some complicated, more for special occasions, and some for much simpler. Most of them look delicious.

My one thought when reviewing any book, movie, what have you, is who is the audience for this book. In this case it seems to be patrons of the restaurant. I'm not sure there are enough to make this cookbook sell. It does look like it would be a delicious addition for people who love Italian food and want to branch out.

A beautifully illustrated cookbook. The stories that accompany the recipes sounded just like my grandma. I loved the intro and the entire book. I recommend for a fun read and wonderful family style recipes.

Make way kitchen cookbook shelf.............this one is going to have its own place of honor on it!! I loved this cookbook......the stories behind the food...the choices made to cook the best of everything...made me want to take a trip to Greenwich Village just to eat at Little Owl!! Being of Italian-American heritage myself, I totally understood the love and joy of cooking found in this book. The recipes SOUND mouth-watering...I can't imagine how good they must taste! The pictures throughout the cookbook are feasts for the eyes! I especially loved the section "Sunday Supper" and then "Homemades". My advice is to read not just the recipes...but the stories, the forward and the afterword to truly understand Joey Campanaro and how much love he puts into his restaurant, cooking and family. I received an ARC of this cookbook from NetGalley and Chronicle Books in return for an honest review, which this has been. #NetGalley #BookLoveCookbook

I'd never heard of Little Owl restaurant, but having read this recipe book, if I was ever in the area it'd be at the top of my list.

Described as comfort food recipes, there are a mix of recipes in terms of effort and time management. It has some tips for things that I already cook - for example their recipe for cheeseburgers is identical to what I make except for the addition of The Harrison Spice Mix (read the book to find out what that is, I'm not spoiling it for them but I will say I would NEVER have thought of adding this mix to burgers!), which I'll definitely be trying. I made the Old-school sweet potatoes (I never would have thought of cooking sweet potatoes in ginger ale!) and they were absolutely divine. Some of the more simple recipes, such as the Little Owl Crispy Chicken, aren't so much a recipe as a guide to how to cook it best, which I really liked - I gained some useful tips and things that I can apply to food in my kitchen.

But I'd say most of the recipes seem like a large amount of effort and may be comforting to eat, but a lot of work to make, something I'd definitely save for a special occasion or entertaining rather than family meals. I really want to try the Pork Chops with Parmesan Butter Beans, but I've never seen a Pork Chop recipe with 23 ingredients before! In a restaurant you will naturally be cooking large quantities of dishes and have all your ingredients. For people at home, it can be a bit fiddly to prepare just one meal that requires just a little bit of lots of things.

I was pleased to see that recipes were measured in grams and ml as well as my most hated measurement, the cup. There are a reasonable amount of photos; but not every recipe has a photo and I would have loved to see every meal pictured. Unfortunately there are no calculations for nutrition or calories, meaning anyone who is tracking dietary requirements will need to calculate this themselves.

The 75 recipes all seem pretty unique and special to me, so this is a great book to have on your shelf when you want to pull off some amazing Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Each recipe is clearly crafted with a great deal of thought and experience. Despite the complexity being generally higher than I expected, I look forward to making these recipes and using this book. In fact, I have plans to use it for our upcoming wedding anniversary!

I love a good cook book. This book is written by Joey Campanaro, the owner of Little Owl Restaurant in New York City. This cookbook is great because of the history and stories behind the restaurant the author worked at and the recipes themselves. The recipes sound delicious and many seem doable for an amateur chef, although many seem time consuming and not friendly to picky kids. I'd classify the cuisine as Mediterranean and Italian-American. The writing is well done, easy to follow, and the pictures are amazing! Would definitely be up for a visit to Little Owl if I'm ever in New York to try some of the recipes from a real chef!

Recipes that sound good to me:
Spinach, Avocado, and Strawberry Salad with Lemon Poppyseed Dressing
Spicy Mexican Style Roasted Corn
Baked Eggplant Parmesan
Gnocchi with Goat Cheese and Ratatouille
Birthday Rum Cake

Loved some of these recipes. Comfort food is my favorite thing to make for family and friends and since everyone is still social distancing, I had the opportunity to try a bunch of these recipes on them.
