Description

They say laughter is the best medicine. For alternative songwriter, illustrator and podcaster BRETT NEWSKI, when a couple of doodles he’d posted to social media making light of his struggle with anxiety and depression garnered a surprising and overwhelming response, Newski decided to make his relatable coping mechanism of drawings into a series. Now, Newski presents three years’ worth of drawings in his book, It’s Hard to be a Person: Defeating Anxiety, Surviving the World, and Having More Fun. [Ramshackle Press, June 22, 2021], offering mental health boosts through humor and relatable quips about the perils of living in our world with a mental illness. Newski’s drawings offer a warmth and innocence that comforts readers and reflects their own experiences to assert that, despite the taboo of mental illness, most of us relate to each other on a deeper level when it comes to mental health. Newski’s podcast “Dirt From the Road” touches on similar mental health themes and has featured alternative rock star guests like All American Rejects, Stealth Ulvang (of The Lumineers), and Dashboard Confessional. As a musician, Newski performs over 100 tour dates per year between the US, Europe and South Africa. He has supported artists, such as Pixies, Violent Femmes, Courtney Barnett, Manchester Orchestra, and Better than Ezra. Newski has been featured in Rolling Stone, NPR, American Songwriter, SiriusXM, Boston Globe, and Billboard.

A soundtrack to the book featuring 8 original songs will release on June 18, 2021 worldwide. It features guest appearances by Barenaked Ladies co-founder Steven Page and Pat Macdonald (“Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades.”)

“When I’m on the road doing comedy, half my job is anxiety. Brett’s book is a great tool for how to use that energy. And the best part is, when I’m too lazy to read, I can just look at the pictures.”- Charlie Berens, Manitowoc Minute

I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a book of doodles and illustrations about coping mechanisms for anxiety and depression. Newski’s doodles and illustrations were great. This was a quick, but satisfying read. I look forward to reading more of his work.

This is a fun book, with a fun title. Indeed, it is hard to be a person. The book contains lots of quirky cartoons, dispensing both psychological advice, how to cope advice, and loads of self deprecation. It was a fun and insightful read. At first, I thought the book was written by a female (sexist me!) as the cartoons were both whimsical but full of insight and empathy. I enjoyed the read and you will too. Thank you, Brett, for helping me being more comfortable being a person, and dealing with life's ups and downs.

I definitely found some smiles and good advice along the way (solid rec about the baby panda slide!). The drawings are loosely grouped by themes and definitely reflect the author's personal feelings and quirks, but the overall tone advocates for kindness, grace, and self-care and everyone can definitely use more than that!

This would be a nice gift for a high school kid--it's funny and non-threatening but also good food for thought.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
