We all live in a very interpersonal world! To effectively work & function together, we must learn how to gel together. I particularly found this book interesting as I’m always striving for ways to improve my relationships with others. This book is especially helpful when you’re forming teams & to make sure you put the right people together.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
EMOTIONAL MAGNETISM by Sandy Gerber is a smart, actionable, practical and immediately relatable guide to navigating the relationships in your life, both the one you have with yourself as well as the ones you have with others. Well-placed anecdotes bring her insights to life -- and I was struck by how much a relatively fast read could have such a lasting impact on me -- for the better of all my relationships. I received a copy of this book and these opinions are my own, unbiased thoughts.
3 1/2 stars. This reminded me of "The Five Love Languages" but is also reminiscent of the philosophy behind Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. I like to read books like this once in a while because I work with adolescents and their parents who often have communication issues (and face-to-face communication is definitely a dying art). But I learned a few things about myself by reading this as well. The author's premise is that people mostly act according to their emotional needs, and we all have one emotional need (value, experience, safety, or achievement) in particular that drives us. By appealing to others' needs, we are able to smooth over lines of communication. This is a valid idea, and being mindful of others can hone empathy skills.
There is some padding, mostly at the beginning, that I ended up skipping over (yes, value is one of my emotional needs lol) and I felt that the "need categories" could easily bleed into each other. Determining what motivates others is really the key, which itself requires some communication skills. For example, a marathoner who's run a race in every state could seem very achievement oriented, but maybe he or she is also in it for the experience. Someone who is focused on saving money seems value oriented--but maybe they're focused on saving money for their kids' activities and don't want to spend unnecessary time at work because they'd rather spend quality time with family (safety orientation). The author does admit that people's needs can fluctuate over time and changing circumstances, and are influenced by upbringing.
Overall: This is a short, easy to read book, and it's something I could share with parents and adolescents, as well as family and friends.
I read an advanced reader copy of this book, and this is my voluntary review. Opinions are my own.
I thought this book did really well explaining all of the emotional motivators. I liked that there was a quiz and each one was talked about extensively. The thing I didn't really like was that I didn't see myself as just one emotional motivator. Different scenarios cause me to have different motivators I saw myself in each motivation.
This book has strategies for helping you identify your emotional magnets and for relating to others with their magnets in mind. The idea is that the self-knowledge (of determining your magnets) will help to bring out better communication and connection within your relationships. Recommended for those interested in improving their communication skills. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
As a communications professional, this book helped me improve my writing, especially for larger groups when appealing to or motivating different types of people. Reading tip: I’d recommend starting with the quiz (page 109 or online sandygerber.com) to learn what your type is (Experience, Value, Safety, Achievement). If you leave this book lying around, don’t be surprised when everyone wants to pick it up and do the quiz themselves! With 13+ awards racked up for this book, you aren’t alone in reading this and applying the techniques.
Reading the example scenarios of how each type might respond to situations like buying a car, having a surprise house guest, or taking a road trip were helpful in guessing what the magnets for others in my life might be. And importantly, why they would react differently to situations than I would.
This is an approachable book to dive into, you get the author’s personality (and west coast Canadian flavour, eh?), plus more on improving your relationships to understand and make yourself better understood.

I have worked professionally in the communication field primarily as a technical writer (online help developer and so on) for the past few decades, and I have worked in Information Technology / Information Systems for my entire career. Obviously, I can communicate professionally, however I have always had a struggle with successful verbal communication in my personal and my work life.
Note: Although I previously mentioned these books are not typically my favorites, I have read a wide range of the most popular of this type, particularly related to improving communication.
