Description

“A liberating guide for every woman ready to embrace her own worth, heal deeply, and find fulfillment from within.”—Wendy Valentine, host of The Midlife Makeover Show and author of Women Waking Up

If you’ve been waiting for your life to start once your relationship status changes, it’s time to rethink things and learn to choose your self first. We often relate to singlehood as a phase that should be rushed and remedied by finding a partner, rather than relating to it as our most potent opportunity for growth. But if the priority is on being chosen over being the one to choose, you’re more likely to keep ending up with the wrong partner. It’s time to break these old patterns and embrace single life with compassion. “One of the great advantages of spending time intentionally single,” shares expert coach and therapist Megan Sherer, “is having time to self-reflect, to learn from your past, and to experiment with new ways of being. Key word: intentionally.”

Sherer teaches how to fall in love with your own life and be unwilling to waver in the pursuit of a relationship as strong as the one you build within your self. Using personal story as well as potent reflection prompts, somatic exercises, and self-care practices, she shepherds you through the process of moving beyond attachment wounds to new levels of self-awareness to build a rock-solid foundation for your relationship with self. If you have an interest in partnering in the future, you’ll also discover how to do so in a way that allows you to remain true to your self. Here you’ll uncover:

Clarity in defining your desires

How your attachment style has impacted your relationships

Why you keep choosing emotionally unavailable people

What your patterns are and how to clean up old habits

How to manage your nervous system and heal your inner child

The magic of doing the things you thought you needed a partner for

It’s time to move from the disempowered experience of loneliness to an empowered version of singlehood—one filled with joy, adventure, play, passion, and all the other things that you thought you had to wait for the perfect person to experience. You are that person, and that time is now.

“A liberating guide for every woman ready to embrace her own worth, heal deeply, and find fulfillment from within.”—Wendy Valentine, host of The Midlife Makeover Show and author of Women Waking Up

Layout of the book was very nice and made it easy to follow along as a reader, especially as a reader with dyslexia!

Read it due to being recently single and it is quite motivating! Advice and general style of writer flowed well.

Thank you to NetGallery and Megan’s team for the opportunity to read this!

Wow! I loved everything about this book. As someone who is NOT single, every part of this book resonated with me. Please don’t let the word “single” keep you from reading this book. Being a woman on a healing journey, this book spoke to my soul. I had many “ah ha” moments while listening.

This was one of the best self-help books I’ve ever read. The author did a great job making the book relatable and using everyday examples. The “try this” sections were practical and tasks people can actually do that won’t take up too much time.

I listened to the audiobook, and immediately ordered the paperback when I finished. This will definitely be a reread for me! The author also has a podcast I discovered after listening to this book called Well, Then.

Thank you NetGalley and Sounds True Audiobooks for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.

This is a book to focus on your self as a part of self care and understanding to love yourself first. By "Choosing yourself first" you will find the path to the only love affair that you will ever need in life. The author goes into tips and tricks to try to regenerate the discussion you have with yourself to boost yourself as you would your best friend. This book is not revolutionary but does restate many thoughts in a different more easily to understand way. This book should be for everyone man, woman and child as there is so much that social media does to keep people in contact but it also only shows one perspective because people don't usually post photo's of people fighting, disagreeing or falling apart, by showing steps to really focus and love yourself this book helps to place focus on personal growth. Thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley.

Reading Choose Your Self felt like having a heart-to-heart with a friend who just gets it. Megan Sherer’s tone is so comforting and down to earth, but also full of wisdom and truth. I loved how this book didn’t just speak at me—it spoke to me.

This is such an empowering read for anyone who’s learning to put themselves first. It’s a guide for how to set boundaries without guilt, listen to your intuition, say no without apologizing, and really figure out what brings you joy. I especially appreciated how practical it was—it’s not all theory. The exercises and reflections felt doable and meaningful.

Whether you’re single or not, this book is a powerful tool for reconnecting with yourself and building a life that feels aligned and joyful. It’s a gentle push in the direction of self-trust and healing. Highly recommend!

Apparently I’m in my “powerful single girl era” because I’ve picked up a number of books on this topic lately. This one was really powerful and held some really great information. Yes some bits and pieces were a pretty surface level dive but there was just so much that anything deeper would have made the book too long and unwieldy. The author is also a pretty solid narrator of her own work. My only major negative though is that for me this book would work better as a physical book instead of audio. There’s too much to process, too many journal prompts and exercises, to keep track of aurally. I would have preferred to be able to highlight and annotate.

I really found this book helpful in forming a better relationship with myself. Regardless of being single or not, it’s so important that we have a great relationship with ourselves and prioritize our wellness otherwise people won’t get the best version of us.

This book shows great examples of finding out how to love yourself from an author who got there herself. I really enjoyed the audiobook and could see myself returning to it for nuggets of insight.

Even as a married woman, this book resonated with me. I truly believe that anyone, in all walks of life, can gain something from this book. The audio was done very nicely and it made for an enjoyable listening experience. I plan to buy a few paperback copies to save to give to my daughters one day! Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.

This book is not about or for me, or so I thought. However, I am currently running a book club on friendship. Plus I have single friends & family. I thought, maybe, it might be helpful in both scenarios. Was I wrong! Me. I am the one who needed to read this book. It contains much of the information in the friendship books I've been reading plus a whole lot more important and practical stuff around inter and intrapersonal relationships. There is something for everyone in these pages. Megan Sherer has a target audience of millennial single women and that very specificity makes it easier to sift through for the stuff you need. Some authors try to write a universal book and it becomes so generalized, it helps no one. This book is very targeted and that focus gives Sherer permission to give concrete examples and practical exercises. I will be recommending this to everyone. Thank you to the author, Sounds True, and NetGalley for the audioARC. A note about the audio: While the narration was warm and welcoming, there was so much I wanted to underline and annotate - I think the audio is best used in conjunction with a paper copy and not instead of.

Even though much of the focus in Choose Your Self is on romantic relationships, I believe it is a perfect fit for my friendship book club. Learning to be alone and to value all relationships is a key to deep friendships, in my experience. Also, I appreciate Sherer's honesty and vulnerability, even if it made me squirm at times. It is obvious the author and I have very different personalities. Understanding how other people move through the world and navigate relationships is an important lesson for me to learn. Overall, this book was full of information I needed and advice I could put into practice immediately. This is your reminder to take a chance on books not written for you, you might find just what you need inside!

Choose Your Self is not just a book—it’s an awakening. Megan Sherer has written a compassionate, deeply insightful, and empowering guide for anyone who has ever felt lost in the noise of other people’s expectations. Her message is simple yet radical: choosing yourself is the most important decision you’ll ever make.

As a licensed therapist, Megan brings both clinical understanding and heartfelt authenticity to every page. She writes with the gentleness of someone who’s walked the hard road herself—and the strength of someone who’s come out the other side with wisdom to share. Each chapter is layered with vulnerable storytelling, therapeutic insight, and reflection prompts that meet you right where you are.

What I especially appreciated was the book’s balance between emotional honesty and practical tools. This isn’t just theory—it’s a blueprint. Megan doesn’t just encourage healing; she guides you through it. Whether you’re setting boundaries for the first time, recovering from burnout, or simply learning how to say "no" without guilt, this book gives you the courage and clarity to do so.

Choose Your Self is a must-read for women navigating transitions, growth, or healing. It will speak to anyone who’s tired of shrinking themselves to fit into places they’ve outgrown. It's a book I’ll return to often and recommend widely.

This book was really wonderful and something I truly needed to read. I thought it was well written and brought valuable insight and information to the table. It was written in a way that I felt I was having dialogue with someone and that they were offering suggestions rather than being condescending, as some other books have done. I appreciated the trigger warnings as the book progressed. She also uses several tools to assist in the writing and conveying the information. The personal stories also helped me feel like I wasn't alone. So much of this book resonated with me, and the book was very relatable. I will be using things from this book and applying them to my life.

I highly recommend this book! I will be purchasing a copy for sure!

Choose Your Self is a good self help book. A lot of it is common sense but when it comes to self-care, often we need a reminder, well I do! There is a lot of information regarding self reflection and inner healing. In addition to the information there are some great practical exercises to support the reader with their journey to self love.

There was not an instant magic trick or the like to embrace being single darn it!

I did enjoy listening to #ChooseYourSelf on Audiobook. The narrator was easy to listen too and the content was clear and concise.

Thankyou to #Netgalley and Sounds True Audiobooks for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Hi again I decided to include the other part of the review here. Cause, thanks to netgalley I was able to listen to the audiobook. And those who know me know that I love to listen to audiobooks.
Going to the technical part, I love the narrator like her voice is so sweet and soft. I think a good audiobook needs a good voice because if not I promise you it's impossible to listen. Going back to the audiobook, the narrator did a great job because with the way the book is written is like I was listening to one of my best friends audios.
Okay so me as Lilly I love listening to the audiobook and reading the book at the same time. I will totally recommend my friends to read this book, because we all deserve to love ourselves.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I am a huge fan of self help books especially those focused on mental health. This book demonstrates how it’s important to put yourself first. To love yourself and find balance from within, not reliant on others. I got so much out of this book! The concept of healing one’s inner child so that moving forward you can be mentally healthier was really intriguing. I would recommend this book to those who want a future partner and for those who don’t. It is very applicable to all relationships not just romantic ones. Being your best self for you and any other relationship you have in life was the point of this book. I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in trade for my honest opinion. My thoughts are my own.

This book is a beautifully written and empowering guide for anyone learning to embrace singlehood with intention. I loved the gentle but powerful message about choosing yourself first, not as a consolation prize, but as the most important foundation for all future relationships. The narration was warm and easy to follow, and I appreciated the mix of personal stories, reflection prompts, and practical strategies.

As someone who values inner growth, I found many moments in this book deeply resonant. I’d love to have a companion workbook to revisit and apply some of the practices more consistently. The cover is gorgeous, and the content is equally rich in wisdom.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

This was a heartfelt and empowering listen—perfect for anyone who’s looking to strengthen their relationship with themselves. Megan Sherer’s Choose Yourself gently encourages self-reflection, self-love, and healthier internal dialogue. Her tone is sincere and inviting, almost like getting voice notes from a supportive friend. While the material wasn’t groundbreaking, it reframed common self-care ideas in a way that felt approachable and authentic.

As an audiobook, it’s well-narrated by the author herself, whose calm and encouraging voice made it feel personal. That said, with the number of exercises and journal prompts, I found myself wishing I had a physical copy to highlight and revisit. Still, it left me feeling more grounded and reminded me how powerful it is to put yourself first—not in a selfish way, but in a foundational, whole-hearted way.

A great listen for anyone in a season of personal growth, healing, or simply wanting to reconnect with themselves.

Choose Your Self is a calming and emotionally insightful listen. As an audiobook, it offers a gentle and reflective pace that works well for absorbing the deeper, more personal themes the author explores. Megan Sherer’s voice and tone create a relaxing atmosphere that allows space for introspection.

The book touches on important topics like healing emotional wounds, redefining what it means to be single, and building a fulfilling life rooted in self-awareness and self-compassion. It doesn’t rush through advice but instead invites you to sit with your feelings and take time to think — which made it feel like a quiet conversation with a wise friend.

While some parts didn’t feel groundbreaking, it still offered meaningful reminders and gentle guidance for anyone going through a transition or seeking more connection with themselves. It’s especially suited for those who are navigating singleness or doing inner work. A solid, thoughtful read.
