Description
If you’re Googling things like “assisted living costs” or “how to convince Mom she’s not fine,” you’re in the right place.
Welcome to the chaotic, guilt-riddled, occasionally hilarious rollercoaster known as helping a loved one transition into senior living. Whether you're bracing for crisis or (miraculously) planning ahead, this book is your compass, cheerleader, and sanity-saver, all rolled into one.
Written by veteran senior living expert Shari Ross, who’s been called everything from “a lifesaver” to “the woman who talked my dad off the ledge with pudding”, this guide gives you the truth, the tools, and the occasional permission to laugh through the absurdity.
Inside, you’ll find:
* The S.I.M.P.L.E. Method: A sanity-saving framework to guide every step of the journey
* How to know when it’s “time” (Hint: yoga bruises aren’t always from yoga)
* Scripts that actually work for starting the conversation (without triggering DEFCON 3)
* What senior living really costs, and how families actually pay for it
* Touring tips, red flag sniff tests, and contracts decoded
* Memory care demystified, crises navigated, and peace of mind reclaimed
Packed with real stories, expert insights, and the kind of advice you’d get from a best friend who’s been there (with snacks), Senior Living Made S.I.M.P.L.E. turns overwhelm into clarity.
You’re not alone. And you’re not crazy. This is hard, but you don’t have to do it blindfolded.

Senior Living Made S.I.M.P.L.E. is a practical and compassionate guide for anyone navigating the confusing and emotional journey of moving a loved one into senior living. Shari Ross breaks down complex topics—like costs, care levels, and tough conversations—into clear, approachable advice while weaving in humor and relatable stories. I especially liked how the book felt both informative and comforting, reminding me that it’s okay to laugh in the middle of a difficult season. It made me feel more prepared and less alone, and that’s exactly what I needed.
🚨 Cue the family drama, grab the pudding cups—this book is a lifesaver! I went in thinking “ugh, another boring guide,” but nope, Shari Ross makes the chaos of senior living decisions feel almost… manageable (and dare I say funny?). I loved how she mixes real talk, actual scripts that don’t sound robotic, and plenty of “you’re not crazy, this is just hard” moments. If you’re in the trenches trying to figure out Mom, Dad, or Aunt Betty’s next steps, trust me—you need this book in your corner. 🙌🏼

This is an outstanding guide to introduce the grown children of an elderly parent about options for when living at home seems more and more difficult and possibly perilous. My sister and I handled it with our mother. My husband and I are going through it for his parents. It's easier the second time around because we've been through it. We know what the options are, we know what questions to ask. But how nice it would be to have had this book the first time!
This book reads like someone is sitting down with you to give you an introduction, advice, and suggestions to deal with the process. What options and levels of care are there? How to talk to Mom (or Dad, or both). How to look at new places. Does the food look good? What does the facility look like when they aren't expecting you? How to handle move-in and beyond. And what red flags may be out there.
It's really a great guide. There is a free service that you may have seen ads for. They will offer help finding actual options for senior living. This book handles the human side. The service offers logistics. But the toughest part is getting Mom to consider making a huge life change and this book is really wonderful at helping you through that. Remember we're all feeling nearly helpless at this stage of our lives and the author has seen it through many, many times. Definitely worth reading.
