Description
The crisp autumn morning nips my nose and ears as Papa and I gather our vests for today’s trip to the river. “We are fly fisherman, the artists of the sport,” my papa says.
Papa and child spend a day on the river, tying fishing lures, admiring nature, mastering the art of fly fishing, and most importantly, spending valuable time together while doing something they love.
For fly fishers who love to share their pastime with family, Fly Fishing with Papa is a sentimental picture book that honors the sport and celebrates the bond between adult and child. Written by Familius’ founder and fly fisherman, Christopher Robbins, the descriptive narration accurately captures the adventures of fly fishers while conveying the importance of conservation and bonding through shared experiences. This adventure and the great outdoors come to life with soft but vibrant illustrations from Yukari Mishima, making every page feel like a glimpse into your own memories of fishing with your papa.

This children’s book offers an insight on an adorable experience with father and child. This was a book I chose to see how well a child would like and my child loved it. She personally has an interest with trying to go fishing with her dad who loves to fish. This made her even more excited for the days they have fishing together in the future. The art work inside the book as well was just illustrated beautifully. A read I’d recommend for parents to read to their child. Maybe a cute read for Dad to read to the kiddos.

Fabulous illustrations! Absolutely loved this book. It was beautifully illustrated and written you almost feel as you are fly fishing with the characters.
I’d love to use this as a mentor text for personal narratives because it captures very specific details about a tradition and its emotions. My 6th graders could connect to this and try to write moment in time narratives.

This book has some lovely illustrations which really suited the story and brought it to life.
The book is well written and the story has a nice flow to it and the author has used some wonderful descriptions.
It is a lovely story about the relationship between a grandson and his Papa and the time they spend together taking part in their shared hobby, fly fishing.
It is 4 stars from me for this one - highly recommended!
Loved this story about a son and his father fly-fishing. The illustrations in this one are really outstanding and the story is simple but sweet. For outdoorsey kids and their parents, I'm sure they'd love this sweet bonding story.

This book, with its rich but accessible wording, and gorgeous illustrations, brings to life the concept of a parent and child going out to indulge in a fishing adventure together. I appreciated the candidness of the wording and the connections between casual wording and more "lingo" that real fly fishers might use (which, for those of us who know very little about the sport, can find in a glossary in the back!) Even a simple story painting something like fly fishing as an art really makes it enjoyable to read this kind of book and imagine a little one getting inspired to try something new, or a child remembering a pleasant day with their family member who previously took them out to a river similar to the one that the narrator and their Papa went to in this story.
Thank you so much Familius Books and NetGalley for an ARC of this lovely book!
The illustrations in this picture book by Yukari Mishima are some of the most beautiful illustrations I've seen this year. Everything was conveyed in the illustrations, even if taking the written parts out they story can still be followed and conveyed. Loved this and love the natural themes.
Beautifully illustrated. Loved the touch on conservation. Would be a great book for a grandpa and grandchild to read together.
A gentle, cozy story of a father and son going fly fishing. Mishima's gorgeous illustrations evoke that special sense of nostalgia, of a young yesterday spent with a beloved parent. As father and son make their way to their special fishing spot, the reader gets to experience the nature and insects they see along the way.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Fly Fishing with Papa is a beautifully illustrated, realistic picture book that feels both gentle and heartfelt. The artwork is absolutely breathtaking and captures the calm, quiet magic of a day spent on the river.
This book will especially resonate with boys who love fishing, particularly those who share that experience with a “papa”. It feels nostalgic in the best way, bringing to life childhood memories many boys and papas will recognize and treasure.
Overall, this is a touching and memorable picture book that celebrates connection, tradition, and time spent together outdoors.
I received a complimentary digital ARC [Advanced Reader copy] of this book via NetGalley. Thank you to the Publisher and the Author for the opportunity to read and review this title prior to publication. As always, the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Fly Fishing with Papa is a story about the wonderful bond between fathers and sons and how they actively participate in modern cultural acts that strengthen that bond. this children's picture book is filled with illustrations to keep young and enthusiastic readers actively absorbed in their literary ambitions and eager to discover what occurs on the next pages. Christopher Robbins has wonderfully described the beauty of conservation, the enjoyment of nature, and the rituals that keeps children eager to listen to, respect, and seek advice and encouragement from fathers and father-figures alike. A glossary at the end of the book further enriches the deep meaning behind this story of a common act that instills patience and kindness in all those who participate.
This book is full of beautiful illustrations. Wow...this artist is very talented. This is a nice peaceful story about a boy fly fishing with his papa. It is a nice example of the bond that kids can share with their parents and grandparents as they learn different things from them. Any kid who loves to fish would love this book. Thank you to Familius and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This book has lovely illustrations, and charming short text that would make it a great read for kids even with short attention spans. A great father, son story about fly fishing and conservation.
The illustrations are so so so beautiful! The depiction of the nature is so pretty, and the color is very detailed and vibrant! Very much alive and it feels like I am walking in the forest and go along the river together with them. I love that I get to know new terms about fishing, especially the term fly fishing. I tink this book is suitable for aged 5 years and above, and such a great read for children who want to spend their quality time with their dads.
I love this so much!
