Author Bio:

I have been an educator and mentor to young people for more than twenty years, and have held academic leadership positions for more than ten years. Now a full-time author, speaker, and academic/life-skills coach, I taught undergraduate and graduate students at three different universities. I have taught leadership and academic success classes, and have provided countless hours of mentoring on academic success, leadership, soft skills, and career navigation. I have received numerous awards and honors for teaching and mentoring. Although I enjoyed success as a researcher, educator, and leader in higher education, my true professional passion is mentoring young people on the development of leadership and soft skills that empower them to succeed.

I have simultaneously published “Empowering Young Christians: Developing Bible-Based Leadership and Soft Skills.” This faith-based book includes all of the advice contained in “Leadership and Soft Skills for Students” plus relevant Scripture and Biblical principles. Kirkus Reviews says that Empowering Young Christians, “…if not unique, is certainly capable of holding its own and providing value in both the self-help and Christian-lifestyle markets.”

It may be because I have middle school students, but this seemed to be written at a college-age level, and was not appropriate for their age. The information is good, but pretty dry. It's still good information, though.

3.5 Stars. This is a great read for college students, career changers, and those that teach college level students.

While most higher education programs focus on teaching core skill sets, it's often the "Soft Skills" that will get individuals positions. As a Counselor that teaches career planning and coordinates a career center at a two-year college, Soft Skills is a workshop that we've always presented to students. With the publication of this book, we can now integrate the content into the curriculum without re-creating materials for each instructor!

Kudos to Cary Green for the publication in a much needed subject!

This book should be required reading for ALL college students. It's packed with real, helpful advice. I especially enjoyed that these are strategies that I used in my daily life and found them effective. This book boils down to three very important points - referred to as the 3 Rs- which are in turn broken down into detailed steps for success. This is the book I wish I read as a Freshman.

While I fully support the need for the book and the ease of which it was written, broken into three distinct sections of Readiness, Relationships, and Results with components and chapters under those three sections, the over-incorporation of his own experiences annoyed and devalued the good content he was delivering.

The introduction to set up the book was necessary and discussed the value of the book and how it's as much of a primer as it is a workbook and that multiple reads are necessary to get the most value out of it. And I don't devalue the need for some primary examples to demonstrate a point, but it was really his biography couched in leadership and soft skills which may be a turnoff for high school students, while "adults" college and beyond maybe be able to overlook them or value them more. The self-centered nature of a teen probably would disengage.

It's useful to have texts like these as handy reference and to demonstrate the need for what true leadership and soft skills are, so kudos to Green for writing a text accessible for this group.

It isn't often that you run across a book that applies to literally everyone; this book happens to be one. Soft skills are something that were once considered unimportant but the most successful individuals are those who have discovered that they remain as vital to today's society as ever. For the younger generation, the question is where to start to develop these skills while the older generation sometimes fails to see how reviewing them will help them to overcome setbacks they've experienced. Cary Green answers these questions and so many more in this book in a straightforward, easy to understand manner. The exercises you encounter as you go through this make the information easy to process and apply to your life no matter what stage you find yourself in.

Personally, I've read through this book with a group of middle schoolers, high schoolers, and recently graduated students. Not only were they able to follow along and apply the information but I found it applicable to myself and several adults I know as well.

If I had to say that there is one specific group of people that need to experience the teachings of this book, I would say those with such challenges as ADHD and the autism spectrum. One of the most difficult things for many who have these challenges (or challenges similar) is the ability to navigate social settings as well as how bridge deficits in executive functioning skills. Executive functioning skills are vital as they address how to set realistic goals. This lesson is so easily taught in this book without actually being addressed as an executive functioning skill. Dr. Green merely addresses these things at the books beginning with the three R's, what they are, why they are important, how to approach them and why.

Dr. Green also examines how soft skills and leadership skills are entwined with one another. As you work on one, the other develops in a very natural way.

I've read many books that discuss aspects of these topics but none is so well put together in such an easy to understand manner as "Leadership and Soft Skills for Students." I cannot urge you to add this to your collection strongly enough.
