Description

This deluxe edition paperback features gorgeous stenciled edges! From Emily Rath, New York Times bestselling author of the Jacksonville Rays hockey romance series, comes something entirely new…and just a little bit haunted.

The haunt is over. This is the hunt. I will have them for my own.

Dáinn the Devourer has spent the last two hundred years of his undead life reluctantly bonded to a dark witch, doing her dirtiest work. Devouring corrupt souls may not be satisfying for a wraith, but it keeps him fed. Sent on a job to Burr Island, Dáinn is forced to devour the soul of a rival witch.

But Jasper Prescott is no corrupt magical misfit. He’s powerful and beautiful, with a soul worth savoring. Dáinn is eagerly devouring the witch when he’s abruptly stopped. By a human no less. With one word, Birdie Rhodes does what no being has ever done: she takes his breath away. Now the witch, the wraith, and the human are set on a path that could lead to their destiny…or their ruin.

Desperate for his freedom, Dáinn makes a deal with Jasper: kill my mistress, and I’ll let you keep living. But Jasper wants more than just to live. He has a coven to protect. Their secrets are being threatened by magical forces on and off the island. Bound together in this strange new deal, Jasper fights his growing attraction to the wraith, who is far more human than he appears. And Dáinn fights the urge to devour the delectable witch whole.

The only one who can save them is Birdie Rhodes, hapless historian and sometimes shop girl. Birdie only came to Burr Island for summer work. She has no idea magic is even real. She certainly has no idea she’s now the only thing standing between her witch boss and the hungry wraith aching to devour them both.

As magical forces of darkness loom at Burr Island’s shores, Jasper and Dáinn are both determined to keep Birdie close in Devour Me, book one in a dark, spicy paranormal romance trilogy.

I didn’t just read Devour Me I practically devoured it. From the very first page, I was completely swept up in the world Emily Rath has created, and I couldn't put it down until I hit the very last word.

The standout feature of this book is, without a doubt, the chemistry. It is electric and felt in every single scene. The connection between all the characters is so layered and intense it’s the kind of writing that makes you feel like you’re right there in the room with them.
The banter was top tier. I found myself laughing out loud at their back and forth. It was sharp, witty, and did such a great job of building the tension.

I am officially obsessed with these characters. Emily Rath has a talent for writing leads that feel distinct and deeply developed, making it impossible not to fall in love with them. You aren't just rooting for a couple you’re rooting for the entire group.
And for those wondering about the spice, it was incredible. It wasn't just there for the sake of being there it was high heat, high tension, and perfectly balanced with the emotional parts of the story.

While the spice and banter are amazing, it’s the emotional depth that truly wrecked me. There’s a specific moment when Jasper asks Dáinn what he sees when he looks at him and Birdie, and the response absolutely hit me in all the feels:
“I see every dream I can never have.”
“When I look at you, I see home.”
Those lines were so raw and beautiful they perfectly capture the yearning and the soul deep connection that makes this story so special.

If you’re looking for a book that offers a perfect blend of humor, romance, and edge of your seat chemistry, Devour Me is a must read. This is now my favorite read of the year! The wait for book two is going to excruciating for me

Reading this book is like enjoying your favorite meal in your favorite place. (Maybe the most Taurus description I could give.) The characters, the world building, the setting, all of it was delectable. Emily continues to show us she has no boundaries from regency to hockey to fantasy to paranormal she can do it all!

5 ⭐️ 3.5 🌶️

Emily’s paranormal romance debut did NOT disappoint!!!

400 years ago, 5 witches were burned alive leaving Burr Island protected from other magical creatures and anyone intent on causing the land harm.

Fast forward to present day, you’ve got Birdie… a human with ZERO knowledge of magic who is hired for the summer by a professor named Ezra Howe to assist him on Burr Island in a dig to help search for the missing bodies’ of said witches.

I fucking LOVE Birdie. I am in love with her. She is so badass, smart and SO funny. And she has every 👏 single 👏 member of the Burr Island coven (including the not-a-cat) wrapped around her finger. 🤭

Enter Jasper, the grumpy High Priest of the Burr Island coven who begrudgingly hires Birdie to work part-time in his shop for the summer at the request of his niece. The connection between Birdie and Jasper is almost instantaneous and it’s HOTTTT.

Add in Dáinn, a wraith sent by his mistress to devour Jasper’s soul and you’ve got a recipe for chaos. My perfect angel faced golden retriever of a wraith who will crawl on his hands and knees. I’m obsessed with him. He’s obsessed with them. It’s all a real good time over here. Until the mic drops. 👀 that last 10% knocked me on my ass.

I absolutely LOVED the dynamic of these characters and the storyline. I love that there is an entire world of magical creatures existing right under the humans’ noses. The banter between Birdie, Jasper and Dáinn was TOP TIER and the spice was immaculate. I can only imagine what’s gonna happen in the next two books.

That cliffhanger though? Brutal. Emily and I are fighting.

Can I give this book 6 stars out of five? I am not typically a romantasy book lover but this story 🔥🔥🔥. Emily created characters that were so phenomenal. I didn’t care if it was a human, a witch or a wraith. This is an incredible story about trying to preserve history on a small island off the East Coast, where presumably the first which trial occur occurred. This is also a story about finding your home in people you would never expect.

My God. This book was everything I would ever want from a paranormal romance and more.

I have loved Emily Rath's books for years now, and I fall in love with her characters over and over again, and this book is no different.

The ending hurt my feelings bc im sorry what do you mean??? what do you mean it's over and i have to wait for book 2? and book 1 is not even out yet?!

Jasper, the grumpy witch who ends up falling for not only his much younger new employee, but also the wraith who has been haunting him and tried to eat his soul.

Daínn, the golden retriever wraith who eats souls but really doesn't want to kill anyone, especially his special witch and human.

Birdie, the human who accidentally ended up on Burr Island and has no idea magic is real but really wants to bang her boss.

I was entertained and enjoying every second of this book, and the mystery behind Burr Island and what is happening is so interesting and I can't wait to see how the conflict resolves in future books.

This book was PHENOMENAL!! I could not put this book down. I was drawn to every word, every character, everything that Emily Rath wrote. Birdie, Jasper, and Dàinn were such complex, compelling characters. They drew me in and wouldn't let me go, and I didn't want to. From the very first chapter with Birdie and Phoebe - to the very end (no spoilers), I was completely hooked and totally in awe. The dynamics, the portrayal of witchcraft, the fabulously unique storyline...it all made for a fantastic story! And that cliffhanger...goodness gracious, it's going to haunt my dreams (a wraith haunting would be acceptable here lol) until the next book comes out and this story continues. Emily Rath...BRAVO!

Reading this book is all my cousin’s fault, and now I need to delve into Rath’s backlist even though it’s not going to satisfy the itch as that cliffhanger left me feeling! Devour Me is a fantastic paranormal polyam romance with so much plot and intrigue. I want so badly to know what happened to the First Five of Burr Island and why Ludmilla is so adamant that she is entitled to something. The pacing as the ending approached felt like it was getting faster because so many things were happening, and that cliffhanger is a doozy! How dare the book end there?? When will the sequel be available?? Loved this and had so much fun with Birdie, Dáinn, Jasper, and the rest of the coven.

Devour Me is aptly titled because I did indeed devour it. It was a two way street though because it devoured me too. I could NOT stop reading. The book starts from a seemingly random POV of a wraith attempting to kill someone and failing for the first time in his existence. Then we jump back a couple days to watch Birdie, a grad student who is absolutely desperate for a job as she meets Jasper. Jasper is a self titled asshole who just so happens to be in need of someone to run his shop so he can focus on a variety of things. Such as running his coven. This book did not stop giving in terms of action, plot, and eventually spice. I never felt bored, and any breaks I took were really just me longing to continue reading. Perfection and I can’t wait for book 2.

If your only experience with Emily Rath is her hockey romance era, Devour Me is about to change everything you thought you knew. This MMF paranormal romance is lush with history, layered with fantasy, and unapologetically steamy. Birdie, Jasper, and Dåinn are an unexpected trio that somehow fit together perfectly. And just when you’re fully invested—bam—that cliffhanger hits.

Drop everything and add this to your TBR! 🕯️✨

I’m usually wary of dark romances, but Emily Rath completely converted me with this one. Imagine cozy, witchy vibes blended perfectly with high-stakes paranormal fantasy.

Why you’ll love it:

The Trio: Three lost souls joining forces to protect their magical island home. I didn’t expect to fall this hard for every single main character!

The Tropes: "Insta-love" done right, found family, and elemental magic.

The Plot: A gripping historical mystery with a breakneck pace.

That cliffhanger, though? I’m officially counting down the days until the sequel!

☞𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁:
🪵Slow Burn w/ insta-lust?
😳Lots of "We can't do this!" moments.
💞🖤MMF/Polyamory
🕶️Fun with shadows
🌑Witches, Tarot and Astrology
🤫Forbidden romance (boss/employee; wraith/humans)
🧗🏽‍♀️Ends on a cliffy (beware)
🐦‍⬛"Touch her and die" from a wholly unexpected source + The ravens are not what they seem

I completely fell in love with this story—and I’m already counting down the days until book two. It has those cozy, magical Practical Magic vibes with the island setting, layered with hints of Charmed and The Vampire Diaries (all I could think of was the Heretics), yet it still felt entirely fresh and original. Dr. Rath I wanna crawl inside your brain !

The world-building is absolutely intoxicating. Every time I had to put the book down, my mind stayed on the setting and the characters. Burr Island is everything it needed to be—rich, atmospheric, and immersive. It genuinely felt like a place you could step into and call home. As for the characters, I adored all three in different ways. Birdie is fierce, independent, resilient, sharp, and effortlessly witty. Jasper is frustrating in that maddening, lovable way—loyal to his core, even when he’s being a complete pain. But Dainn? He completely stole my heart. He’s layered and complex, yet somehow still innocent, whimsical, and incredibly sweet.

The side characters added so much depth that the story wouldn’t be the same without them. Hortie is an absolute force—chaotic, fiery, and unforgettable. And honestly, I think it’s safe to say… #TeamPickles.

And that ending? It was the best & most infuriating thing in a wholesome way. I wanted so bad to throw the book across the room (but since it was my kindle I refrained). I wanted immediate answers from Emily. It was an irrational, almost giddy kind of anger that reminded me exactly why I love reading so much. This ending delivers all the best vibes.

At this point, me and Emily are situated in our enemies to lovers arc (pending book two). I have faith in our conversion though 😉. I’ve already preordered my physical copy and despite knowing what I know will probably read it all over again.

If you love mystery, suspense, a lustful slow-burn romance that’s full of banter, whimsy, and all the paranormal tidbits—this is a must read. However don’t say I didn’t warn you about the ending or that you may end up a wee bit obsessed. Because I did (3x now 😂).

Thank you, NetGalley and Avon Books, for this ARC !! OMFG!!

In the true words of Birdie Rhodes, I'm still processing!

A minute to fan girl over Emily Rath because GIRL! Her writing is just amazing! I have read almost everything she has written, and this has to be in the top 3.

I was so curious to see how she would give us a paranormal romance with her amazing queer, smutty twist, AND she delivered!!!

This book gave TVD vibes, meets shadow daddy, with a Kick ass FMC.

The spicy was delightful.
The side characters are AMAZING!
The plot was PLOTTING! I did NOT expect the ending. In true word delulu fashion, I just thought Birdie would be Ludmilla's long lost daughter 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thank you Netgalley!

Emily Rath is the GOAT. Her writing, no matter the genre, sucks me in immediately. I loved the paranormal aspect of this and ate it up immediately! Emily does such a phenomenal job diving into detail about the characters, setting, and everything in between. I can always vividly picture what I'm reading in my head. I never feel like it's too much detail like in some stories.

The characters of Devour Me were to die for (I also fell in love with sassy Pickle because hello...cat!) The friendship, relationships, and individual characters were so well built on. I loved them!

I can't wait to read more stories like this from Emily. Especially if they're MMF or any combination of the sort!
