From the first chapter, I was pulled into Kate Murray’s frantic, high‑stakes scramble to redeem herself after a career‑threatening mistake. She’s ambitious, flawed, and wonderfully human—exactly the kind of protagonist you root for even when you’re wincing at her choices.
The murder of Margaret Severing becomes Kate’s lifeline, and watching her chase the story feels like riding shotgun through the city’s underbelly. Tyre balances newsroom tension, police politics, and street‑level danger with sharp pacing and vivid detail. The two men orbiting Kate—Detective John Finn and Dominick Donatti—add an unsettling emotional charge. Finn’s vulnerability gives the book a surprising tenderness, while Donatti’s volatility keeps the tension humming.
