Description

Does blood make a hero?

A professional fighter, Tuesday Graves has built her life around a simple principle: don't let anyone come close enough to hurt you. It’s a rule she applies to her personal life too.

Surviving on the margins of a decaying city, she fights for money and keeps the world at arm's length. Then the one person she loves, the only one she trusts, hands her over to Mattox, the leader of a militant sect chasing the power of the Ancients.

Held captive for months, then subjected to a genetic experiment, Tuesday changes. So do four other prisoners who shared her fate. With new abilities, new instincts, and no way back to their old lives, the group manage to escape – only to find themselves struggling to understand what they've become and what, if anything, they owe a world that never protected them.

Tense, melancholic, and ultimately hopeful, The Mourning Lily is a science fantasy adventure brimming with themes of found family, feminine rage, and heroes who grapple with putting themselves first, or last.

The Mourning Lily feels like stepping into a world soaked in grief, magic and quiet yearning. It has that soft, haunting atmosphere that clings to you while you read, the kind that makes everything feel a little fragile and a little enchanted. The writing is beautiful and gentle, full of emotion without ever tipping into melodrama.

The characters are what really pulled me in. They feel bruised and real, carrying their pain in ways that make you want to reach into the book and hold them. The relationships are tender and complicated, shaped by loss and hope and the desperate need to heal. The magic is woven through everything in a way that feels intimate rather than flashy, like it is part of the characters’ bones.

It is definitely a slower, character‑driven story. More of a mood than a plot, something you sit with rather than race through. If you love emotional fantasy with soft magic, aching hearts and that bittersweet feeling that lingers after you close the book, The Mourning Lily is a beautiful read.

I’m giving it 4 stars because the atmosphere and emotional depth really worked for me. It didn’t quite reach full obsession level, but it is tender, magical and quietly powerful in a way that stayed with me.

I liked Tuesday because she feels like a REAL PERSON who goes through difficult things but still finds the strength to keep going. I also reallyy liked the themes of friendship, betrayal, and finding yourself. I really enjoyed this book!! I loved the found family aspect. The superhero concept was great. I wish there were more super hero novels out there. It gave anime vibes which I really loved. Overall, I would totally recommend this to a friend/ someone who enjoyed the renegade series, the vicious series and Devil May Cry.
