I loved reading about the Hugenots and what they went through in this book. The year is 1742 and the Hugenots in France are suffering persecution. The Hugenots were a protestant group in France and were persecuted by the Catholic majority. Suzanne’s family suffered persecution and even though Suzanne did not share her parent’s faith her life was in danger. Loved the character of Johan and how he was committed to protecting her and seeing her to safety. Loved seeing how Suzanne came into her own faith. Lots of adventure in this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes historical romance.

Thanks to Netgalley and Pelican Book Group for providing me a digital copy of this book to review.

The more I keep diving into historical fiction the more I want to read them! this book certainly appeased my craving for a good historical read. The author did a wonderful job of writing for the time period and in the time period. It bothers me when a historical book will contain either wording from this century, or tools/objects. That did not happen here and I applaud Carrie for that.

I have seen this book everywhere lately, Facebook, online groups and through friends. I expected it to be spectacular based on what I had been hearing and I am happy to report it met expectations. I was drawn to it initially by the beautiful cover. I couldn't wait to meet the character on the front and see what life was like for her. And I loved reading about Suzanne and the trials life brought her way.

I received a complimentary copy of the book through NetGalley for an honest review which I have given.

Highly Recommended, but Will Not Lend!!

I have found another new- to-me author, Carrie Fancett Pagels, to watch closely. Having just finished her Saving the Marquise's Granddaughter, I am in awe of her talent as a writer and storyteller.

Set in the time of the persecution of the French Huguenots, Suzanne Richelieu must flee her homeland when her family is betrayed. A young, quiet, handsome German comes to her rescue and defends her to his family, his town, and even against his better judgment.

When unexpected tragedy follows Suzanne, she and Johan must emigrate to America. Can they find a common faith, trust in God AND each other, and avoid the many dangers in their path?

The time of the French Huguenot persecution is fascinating and terrifying. Ms. Pagels recounts the court of Louis XV, causing the reader to live the intrigue, secrecy, and fear along with the heroine.

The part of the story tapestry that is weeks crossing the ocean and time spent in America is just as tightly woven and nerve-jangling. One wonders, along with the immigrants, if there can be favorable outcome, or if all the trouble has been for naught.

Favorite quote?
"You need your own faith. This you cannot borrow."

This book touched me in so many ways that I happily recommend it, but to misquote the author, "This you cannot borrow." I gratefully received an e-galley from Netgalley.com.

I enjoyed reading Carrie Pagel's Saving The Marquise's Grandaughter. Ms. Pagel obviously did her homework and her love of History is quite evident throughout the book. I would like to know a little more about the Hugonaut Faith but otherwise, I was quite pleased with the story. The characters had depth to them and the scenes were described in vivid terms. I would love to see a sequel that details what happened after this book ends. I feel there is more to the story!
I was given this book by Netgalley.com in exchange or my honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Saving The Marquise's Granddaughter by Carrie Fancett Pagels, is a rich historical novel loosely based on an ancestor of the author. Pagels tells a story of intrigue and romance that takes the reader from 1700s Europe to America. The journey is fraught with dangers and Suzanne, the Marquise's granddaughter finds friends and foes all along the way. This is a tale of religious freedoms and Suzanne has based her religion on her parents' faith. Can she find her way to knowing God through her own beliefs and faith?
What will that mean as she struggles through living a life of poverty, death, and despair, a life she has been protected from as the Marquise's offspring? The author touches on emotional, physical, and religious persecution issues in such a realistic manner that readers can easily immerse themselves into the story. The romantic tension is great...Suzanne is betrothed to one man and loved by another. Who will she choose? Will she have a choice or be forced to return to a former life? A gripping, captivating story. Not to be missed.

Guillame "Guy" and his younger sister Suzanne are Huguenots in France during a time of great unrest and political instability. After her father is arrested Suzanne must follow through with the escape plan on her own.

She entrusted into the care of Johan Rousch, a man willing to risk his life to keep her safe as they travel to America.

New opportunities await on a path fraught with danger.

Suzanne really grows a lot over the course of the book and the way that she sees the world changes as well. In the beginning she comes off as naive, and a bit spoiled, blaming her parent's faith for all of her problems, and preferring her grandmother's traditions more. But through Johan and his unwavering faith, she comes to see things in a different light.

Overall, a real journey of character for Suzanne, who experiences a whole new side of life. The book was very well researched. It was a bit slow to start, but had a great ending, and interesting characters living during a challenging era. Great for fans of French history.

It took me a few pages to get into the story. Mostly, because English is not my first language. I had to adjust to the historical setting and some words and phrases. I absolutely didn't mind the French and German comments, I speak both languages. It made the story in a way more 'alive'. After I got used to the writing style, I couldn't put the book down. It's a great story about love, vulnerability, perseverance, strength and family.

This was quite an epic story about Suzanne Richelieu and Johan Rousch and their journey towards love.

Suzanne was a French aristocrat who fled France because of her Huguenot parent's beliefs that were not accepted in France. In addition to fleeing from the army, she was fleeing from family "friends" who wished to abuse and degrade her. She fled straight into the arms of Johan Rousch, a German peasant, whom she had met once before in her youth. She recognized his eyes but he was now a grown man.

Johan and Suzanne boarded a ship bound for Philadelphia out of desperation to escape those who might capture and harm Suzanne. Unfortunately, the ship they boarded was not only bound for the colonies in America but harbored indentured servants, which they became, out of necessity. Suzanne became gravely ill on the voyage and Johan married her but could he save her life?

This story is a clean romance saga with a happy ending. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The persecution of the Huguenots when Catholicism was more in power isn't covered that often in books. This book is impressive with that aspect as well as many vivid characters. The book opens with characters that are easy to be interested in quickly, and a big ball in progress. The French don't like them for their beliefs. This was a huge time of persecution.

Suzanne's mother is very sick, and yet they must flee and head for safety.
Johan is a German farmer and he is the one providing shelter for Suzanne and her family. This is just the very start of so much that it is hard to put into a review. This book is rich in history, and I have heard it is partly from the author's family background. Even if it isn't, this book is amazing and I'm so glad I didn't miss it.

My copy came from Net Galley. I was not required to leave a review, I do so of my own free volition. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

One of my favorite type of genres that I like thus I am biased with my ratings. Decent storyline and a cute romance with enough flair for my taste.
