Description
“I have a hard time looking at you and figuring out what you are thinking and feeling, but that’s ok because you can look at me and learn how I think and feel,” says Zak, the confident and lovable protagonist of Uniquely Wired. The book walks readers through some of the things that Zak does that can make him seem strange or different, and explains the reasons why he does what he does. From his incredible memory for facts about trains and watches, to his rapid body movements that allow him to feel the air against his skin, or his dislike of hugs and physical contact, Zak teaches readers that although his brain works differently, it is pretty incredible, and he has a lot of gifts to share. This one of a kind look into the life and mind of a child with autism rewards curiosity and helps make “uniquely wired” children more relatable to their peers. It provides answers to questions that children may have about their peers who may behave differently because of their autism. It also promotes awareness of the often-overlooked gifts that children on the autism spectrum have, as well as pointing out the ways that they’re similar to, or exactly like their peers.

This is an exceptional children's book centered around understanding a child with autism. The narrative is helpful and very strengths-focused; each time a behavior is described, it is then described by those around the child as a gift and a different perspective. I think this book will help parents and teachers, too, as autism is not widely understood by the general population. The book was sensitive, informative, and heartwarming. I highly recommend it for professionals who work with children who have autism, parents, teachers, and, of course, children.
Thank you to Julia Cook, Boys' Town Publishing, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.
