Description

Lorcan Travis yearns for adventure, away from his quiet life on the family farm in rural Ireland. He joins the British Army, and after a traumatic voyage to North America, he finds all the action and adventure he could ever imagine, as he faces the cruelty and savagery of the Native Americans and the clash of armies in the rugged and wild country he has to operate in.

He volunteers to be trained as an army scout by the Mohawk Indians, to live and fight with them against the French and their allies, the Algonquin Indians. The British soldier’s concept of the Indians is that they are heathen, murdering savages. However, in the fullness of time, he learns to respect them, their way of life and traditions. His story is strewn with the horrors of war as he and his Indian partner White Owl battle their way through the Seven Years’ War that helped the British achieve the prize of Canada.

Advance Praise

As with previous books written by this author, I found it impossible to stop reading. The books he writes are impeccably researched - that much is obvious, and he weaves the story in such a manner as to leave you thinking about the myriad details he includes.

You can tell that this author has well researched the material for this novel. and created an action packed story around events. Recommended.

A classic and well researched novel by a master storyteller. It covers a long forgotten military conflict that deserves to be brought to the attention of a 21st century audience. Highly recommended

This story is historical fiction about the conflict between the English and the French on the east coast in Canada and the northern US. It is also the tale of Lorcan Travis who emigrated from Ireland to fight for the British. He thought Indians were brutal savages. They were but they were more than that...

BooksGoSocial and Net Galley let me read this book for review (thank you). It has been published and you can get a copy now.

The fighting between the French and English was brutal. I didn't know much about this history so that made it an interesting read for me. I also enjoyed watching Lorcan learn the Indians were smart. After he had distinguished himself fighting, he finds himself assigned to be part of an Indian scouting group. As he learns the way of Indians he begins to respect them.

Both sides had tribes of Indians helping them. Most of the Indian tribes were enemies anyway, so it was easy to decide which side they fought on.

Lorcan is working with White Owl, who doesn't like his sword. He throws it on the ground several times but Lorcan picks it up and puts it back in its sheaf. Then White Owl breaks the point. He still puts it away, but in time it earns him the name Broken Sword.

Broken Sword falls in love and marries but he loses her and his stepson to smallpox. He continues fighting. This is a seven year war and it seems it will never end.

I like reading historical fiction. It fills in the blanks in my education. I also have an interest in Indians. I have Indian relatives. And, no, they are not dumb.

From a rural life to serving in the army during an important war in Canadian history - the French vs the British, we follow Locan as he navigates his way through a changing world. There was certainly plenty of action in this historical fiction, and I thought real events were woven in well to the overall plot. It's clear plenty of research went into this, and the writing is captivating. A great read overall.
