Another insightful and informative addition to the growing collection of books on menopause. While I found this book incredibly helpful—especially in introducing me to the estrogen patch and encouraging me to explore it further—I do wish there were more resources that delve specifically into the nuances of early menopause and life after menopause. Menopause may be a natural phase, but let’s be honest—it’s no walk in the park. Still, this book offered both clarity and validation, which I deeply appreciated.

Many thanks to NetGalley and John Murray Press US | Sheldon Press for providing an eARC of The Menopause Moment: Mindset, Hormones and Science for Optimal Longevity prior to publication.

I’ve read a lot of books about perimenopause and menopause in the past decade. I only read books by doctors or trusted health professionals to avoid the bs that surrounds Women’s health.

Casperson’s book was fabulous. Up to date information and research (with oodles of notes and the back of the book) all told in a conversational, lighthearted way.

There was lots of detailed discussion about hormones that I found fascinating as well as information about sexual health and desire in menopausal women that I was grateful for. The practical stuff was American-centric, but it has given me enough information about the results of new studies to talk to my doctor about what alternatives might be available in Australia.

Highly recommended for any woman over 35 (and her partner).

What strikes me most is the author's emphasis on dismantling fear-based narratives around menopause. Too often, women navigate this transition with outdated information and cultural shame. Casperson's science-backed approach combined with empowerment messaging suggests this could be genuinely liberating for readers who've felt confused or dismissed by traditional medical approaches.

I jumped at the opportunity to read and review Dr. Kelly Casperson's new book, The Menopause Moment. Dr. Casperson is a urologist who strongly advocates for women's education about thier own bodies and access to hormonal treatment. I came across Dr. Casperson years ago on YouTube when I was searching for information about pelvic floor dysfunction. She provides complicated information in an easy to understand manner and provides research based solutions. Unlike the solutions she had for pelvic floor dysfunction, many of the solutions she provides in The Menopause Moment, are not currently available to all women. This book is more than a resource for women considering menopause hormone therapy, it is a push for rethinking how to treat the symptoms of menopause. I encourage everyone to read this book and consider how our current healthcare system treats women and views menopause. Thank you to Dr. Casperson, Sheldon Press, and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy of The Menopause Mooment.

The Menopause Moment is a refreshing, empowering, and much-needed resource that cuts through the confusion and stigma surrounding midlife and menopause. Kelly Casperson delivers science-based insights with clarity and compassion, helping women understand what’s really happening in their bodies—without fearmongering or outdated myths.

This isn't a one-size-fits-all prescription; instead, Casperson offers readers the knowledge to make informed choices about hormones, health, and longevity. It's part science, part mindset shift, and completely affirming. As more women raise their voices around this once-taboo topic, books like this feel revolutionary in their honesty and helpfulness.

The only thing holding it back from a perfect rating is a desire for even more real-life applications or stories—but as an educational foundation, it’s powerful. For anyone navigating or approaching menopause, this is an essential, sanity-saving guide.

This book is one of the most informative and well-structured resources on menopause that I have ever read. Written from a urologist’s point of view, it provides a refreshing and deeply clinical yet approachable perspective on the stages of menopause—perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. The author breaks down the full spectrum of symptoms that women may experience, from the well-known hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances to the often under-recognized urologic changes such as urinary frequency, urgency, and recurrent infections.

What sets this book apart is the level of detail in its discussion of treatment options. Every major approach—hormone replacement therapy, non-hormonal medications, lifestyle changes, supplements, and newer therapies like laser treatment for genitourinary syndrome of menopause—is clearly explained. The author outlines not only how each option works, but also the expected benefits, possible side effects, and what patients can realistically anticipate in terms of outcomes.

The book doesn’t shy away from nuanced topics, such as the individualized risks and benefits of estrogen therapy, or how non-hormonal strategies like SSRIs or gabapentin can play a role in symptom control. Practical sections give patients and providers alike clear roadmaps for tailoring treatment to a woman’s personal health profile and goals.

Overall, this book is both empowering and practical. It leaves readers with a thorough understanding of what menopause entails, reassurance that their experiences are valid, and confidence in navigating the many treatment options available. Whether you’re a woman approaching this stage of life, already in the midst of it, or a healthcare professional seeking a deeper knowledge base, this is an invaluable guide.

Thank you to NetGalley, Sheldon Press, and Dr. Casperson for the opportunity to read an advanced copy.

The Menopause Moment by Dr. Kelly Casperson is one of the most refreshing books I’ve read about menopause. The author’s tone is at once comforting and witty…like a very wise and well-educated older sister. So much research is presented and dissected in a way that is easy to understand. I especially loved the summary points at the end of each chapter. After reading this book I feel much more prepared for this stage of life in general, and I now have necessary information to have an educated talk with my doctor. I appreciate the author, NetGalley and John Murray Press US | Sheldon Press for providing an eARC of The Menopause Moment: Mindset, Hormones and Science for Optimal Longevity in exchange for my honest review.

I've read quite a few menopause related books, and this is by far my favorite! Dr. Kelly Casperson has a completely relatable way of sharing a ton of complex information, but with a sense of humor that I absolutely love, and in a way that anyone can truly understand. Her no-nonsense way of explaining, as well as providing all of the studies and pertinent links to back up all that she shares, is the fresh and direct way that menopause truly needs to be addressed, in my opinion! While I came into this book knowing a lot about menopause and perimenopause already, being as I'm 6 years into my own HRT journey, I still learned so much, as this book covers such a wide range of conversations around menopause and even more specifically, hormone replacement.

In this book, you'll learn how your body works, what hormones even are, and what they do. She speaks about sex, aging, bones, and osteoarthritis, supplements, and so much more! You'll find tons of practical information - it will help you know what questions to ask your Doctor, why, and even how. It's not a source for medical advice, but more a resource to empower you to truly make an informed decision about your healthcare. An area where so much misinformation is shared, I love her approach and will be sharing and recommending this book to all of my pre- and perimenopausal friends!

In The Menopause Moment, urologist and women’s sexual health expert Kelly Casperson takes a deep dive into the subject of menopause and women’s options for not just surviving, but thriving through this dramatic shift in hormones, health, and mindset. Throughout, Casperson pokes holes in the flawed studies and media alarmism that not only scared women away from natural hormone therapy during the first two decades of the 21st century, but also led to a hormone-therapy knowledge deficit among health providers that still makes it difficult for women to access effective menopause care today. Citing reputable studies and breaking down what the risk-related numbers really mean, Casperson makes a compelling case that hormone therapy is safe for most women and is usually the most effective treatment for the long-term low-hormone state that is menopause. And not only is it effective at treating “classic” menopause symptoms like sleep disturbances and hot flashes—natural hormone therapy also supportive of sexual health, bone health, heart health, brain health, and longevity.

Loved this! What could be dry and clinical becomes engaging and relatable, thanks to Casperson’s down-to-earth and often funny delivery. As a 50-year-old woman, I’m right smack dab in the middle of my own menopause moment, and I’m so glad I found my way to this helpful, highly informative read. It’s already shaping the approach I’m taking to manage the rocky years of early menopause and help prevent the health problems that could result from decades of low-hormone living. Luckily, I have a health provider who is knowledgable and supportive of hormone therapy, but The Menopause Moment has educated me on a deeper level than I could get in a half-hour doctor visit, and I feel like a more knowledgable and empowered self-advocate after reading it. Casperson emphasizes that goal again and again in The Menopause Moment: She wants women to be informed and empowered to decide what’s right for them. The way she sees it, neither government health agencies nor ill-informed health providers should be acting as gatekeepers keeping women from treatment that’s proven to be safe and effective.

Of course, The Menopause Moment isn’t only for 50-year-old women. After all, one hundred percent of women either already have or will go through perimenopause and menopause someday. This book is for them—both the 40-year-old curious about what’s coming and the 65-year-old wondering if hormone therapy can still benefit her. (Spoiler alert: It can.) It’s also for all the partners, family, and friends who love us and want to better understand and support the women in their lives. Highly recommended.

An informative and empowering read that presents perimenopause and menopause in a clear, positive, and approachable way. The structure of the book is especially effective—the layout is easy to follow, and the concise takeaways at the end of each chapter help reinforce key insights.

This is an essential resource for all women over 40, offering both practical guidance and reassurance during a life stage that’s often misunderstood or overlooked. Highly recommended.

I am so happy that menopause is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Now we just need society to support us through this change of life.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

Book Review: The Menopause Moment: Mindset, Hormones and Science for Optimal Longevity by Kelly Casperson, M.D.

Dr. Kelly Casperson’s The Menopause Moment is a groundbreaking, science-backed guide that reframes menopause as a transformative phase of life rather than a medical deficiency. Blending rigorous research with compassionate storytelling, Casperson—a urologist and hormone expert—demystifies menopause, offering actionable strategies for thriving in midlife and beyond.

Premise & Themes
This book challenges the cultural narrative that menopause is a decline, instead positioning it as a pivotal “moment” to optimize health, longevity, and self-empowerment. Casperson dissects the interplay of hormones, mindset, and lifestyle, debunking myths while providing evidence-based advice on topics like bone health, sexual wellness, and metabolic changes. The tone is both authoritative and relatable, making complex science accessible without oversimplifying.

Strengths & Highlights
-Science Meets Empathy: Casperson bridges clinical expertise with personal anecdotes (including gaps in her own medical training), creating a narrative that feels both informative and deeply human.
-Holistic Approach: Beyond hormones, the book emphasizes mindset shifts, advocating for self-advocacy in healthcare and societal change.
-Practical Tools: Readers will appreciate clear, actionable steps—from nutrition tweaks to stress-management techniques—tailored for midlife women.
-Myth-Busting: The book confronts pervasive misconceptions (e.g., “estrogen is dangerous”) with up-to-date research, empowering readers to make informed choices.

Areas for Improvement
While comprehensive, some readers might crave more diverse perspectives (e.g., cultural or socioeconomic variations in menopause experiences). The focus on longevity could also delve deeper into emotional/spiritual aspects of aging.

Score Breakdown (Out of 5)
-Scientific Rigor: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) – Meticulously researched and cited.
-Accessibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) – Jargon is well-explained, though some sections demand focus.
-Practicality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ (4.5/5) – Actionable advice, but a few strategies may require professional support.
-Narrative Flow: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) – Engaging, though occasionally dense for casual readers.
-Cultural Relevance: ⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5/5) – Primarily Western-centric; broader inclusivity would strengthen it.
Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) – A must-read for women navigating menopause and allies seeking to understand it. Casperson’s work is a rallying cry for reframing midlife as a gateway to vitality.

Perfect For:
-Women approaching or experiencing menopause hungry for science-backed guidance.
-Healthcare providers looking to better support menopausal patients.
-Feminists interested in the intersection of medicine and societal aging narratives.

After reading another another popular recent release about menopause, I was interested to read more since I'm nearing that phase of my life. The Menopause Moment was an interesting read but I didn't really learn anything new that I didn't already know. To be honest, my enjoyment level would have probably been higher if I had more time in between the two reads. This is a very useful resource for women over 40 and I would still recommend it. Ms Casperson is a talented writer and doesn't talk over your head in medical jargon, she makes the info easy to understand.

This was chock full of useful information for women. To know that women can live their later half of life with great quality is refreshing. Getting past the old stigmas that have been ingrained in us and taking our heath in our own hands is the key.
I didn’t agree with the views and responsibilities of FDA. My opinion is they have fallen short and I cannot help but wonder is there is some financial motivation. This was an informative book that I recommend for all, women and men.
