Description

A certified death doula provides an accessible and digestible guide to dealing with the legal, financial logistical hurdles of a parent's death—without losing your sense of humor.

Whether you’ve recently lost a parent or you're just trying to plan for the toughest day of your life so far, you’re probably experiencing a lot of dizzying emotions. Unfortunately, you’re also going to need to enter an overwhelming maze of paperwork and bureaucracy.

But you don’t have to do it alone.

After losing both parents, Becky Robison devoted herself to making death and postdeath logistics easier on others. She draws on her own experience, plus interviews with experts ranging from monument makers to morticians, to hold your hand through:
  • Asking your parents about their end-of-life wishes while you can
  • Getting a body buried, cremated, or donated to science
  • Planning a funeral
  • Securing a death certificate
  • Dealing with your parents’ property—or debt
  • Handling even more tricky issues you never wanted to be in charge of
  • And still being able to laugh, a little, sometimes

Nothing about this is easy. The good news is you have someone on your side.
A certified death doula provides an accessible and digestible guide to dealing with the legal, financial logistical hurdles of a parent's death—without losing your sense of humor.

A solid, well-organized guide to what to do after the death of your parents. This is a much-needed guide - and it's got a great title.

I read this ARC in exchange for an honest review
All thoughts and opinions are mine

Unfortunately the reason for my choosing this title is that I have lost my own parents within 19 months of each other and the going has been tough to say the least

I wasn't necessarily looking for answers but found it comforting that what I have been going through and feeling is 'normal'. Whatever 'normal' is

I found this helpful and would recommend it as a read

This book is a guide to what to do when a loved one dies and you are responsible for all the legal, financial, and social obligations. While the title refers to parents, this is useful for anyone where you are the person who gets to do or help with all the work: what steps to take, how to work with a funeral home, what to do with wills and trusts you are now responsible for shepherding through legal processes, who you owe money to, etc. All the steps! Helping your living loved ones prepare their paperwork is also included. What is not covered in detail is the emotional side of death and grieving. As the author notes, there are tons of resources on this, and this book is more focused on procedural things. A couple of things I found very helpful were tasks you can delegate to others and tips for self care.

The author fumbled her way through the process after the death of her parents and developed a website with info. From this, her interest grew and she both became a certified death doula, interviewed a variety of experts, and wrote this book. Much of the info on the website is included, but the book form makes it easier to progress through the process. This book contains bit of her personal story and is filled with humor, though some may be bothered by the snarky anti-capitalist sentiment, which I found refreshing to have said out loud.

There are other books, websites, and products you can purchase to help you through your own planning and what to do to administer an estate. This is one resource in the mix, but what makes this one special is its accessibility. The author doesn't assume you understand the legal terms being tossed around. The humor is also such a delightful addition to the other resources on this subject. Read the book. Laugh. Be more prepared for your life and your loved ones' deaths. Share this book with others.
